The HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest I & II is now available, following the successful release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake last year. Many fans wondered why Square Enix remade Dragon Quest III before I and II. Besides being the first game in the trilogy’s story, Dragon Quest III is also the most well-loved of the three titles.
Putting business considerations aside, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake came out this week, and the extra content suggests Dragon Quest II is designed to conclude the story arc started in the remakes. Without giving away any spoilers, the fact that Square Enix rewards players with bonus save data in Dragon Quest I & II for having save files from Dragon Quest III on the same platform makes it a good idea to play Dragon Quest III first.

What order to play Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?
In a recent interview with the PlayStation Blog, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake producer Masaaki Hayasaka revealed that series creator Yuji Horii hoped Dragon Quest III would be remade as a good starting point for new players. However, the development team ultimately decided it would be best to play the games in the order of III, then I, and finally II, and Hayasaka recommends this order to players.
What order to play Dragon Quest I, Dragon Quest II, and Dragon Quest III
Just so you know, the remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games (available on mobile and Nintendo Switch) each have their own separate stories. This means you can play the remakes of Dragon Quest I and II without needing to play Dragon Quest III first. You can find the complete quote from Masaaki Hayasaka’s interview below.
As a big Dragon Quest fan, a lot of people have been asking if you need to play Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake before jumping into the remakes of I & II. The good news is, you totally don’t! Each game – I, II, and III – has its own separate story, so you can enjoy them in any order. But honestly? The developers and I both think you’ll get the most out of the experience if you play them in the order of III, then I, and finally II. They’ve added some cool twists and surprises that really hit harder if you follow that timeline, telling Erdrick’s story chronologically. So, if you’re up for it, I highly recommend playing them that way!
