DoorDash has introduced Dot, a fully electric robot designed to handle deliveries within your neighborhood. Created by DoorDash Labs, this small vehicle is able to navigate bike paths, sidewalks, driveways, and streets, reaching speeds of up to 20 mph.
Dot is initially launching in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona, as a limited early access trial before becoming available in more locations. This robot connects directly to DoorDash’s new Autonomous Delivery Platform, which utilizes artificial intelligence to determine the most efficient delivery method for each order – whether it’s through a Dasher, a robot like Dot, or even a drone.
Sometimes, a large car isn’t necessary for delivering small items like toothpaste or diapers. This idea is what led to the creation of Dot,” explained Stanley Tang, Co-Founder and Head of DoorDash Labs.

Part of a larger system
According to the company, Dot will focus on quick, local deliveries, and Dashers will keep handling the majority of orders. The Autonomous Delivery Platform works like a dispatcher, connecting each order with the quickest and most effective delivery method.
Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman explained that this launch showcases the city’s commitment to trying out new technology. “Having these self-driving delivery robots operating on Mesa’s streets proves how these innovative technologies can help with everyday tasks and also support the local businesses that are so important to our community.”
Uber Eats is a food delivery service that’s also testing out robots for deliveries-they drive on sidewalks. Back in 2023, one person’s TikTok video even went viral after showing a funny encounter, or “beef,” with one of these robots.
