Delroy Lindo has spoken out about the incident at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards where a racial slur was used while he was on stage with Michael B. Jordan. During the introduction for their film, Sinners, a guest with Tourette’s syndrome – identified as John Davidson, who inspired the film I Swear – involuntarily shouted a racial slur as part of a verbal tic. The moment caused public concern and led to an apology from the BBC.
Lindo has said he was upset with how BAFTA handled the incident, explaining to Vanity Fair that he would have liked someone from the organization to reach out to him directly afterward. He and Jordan Peele remained professional and presented the award for Best Special Visual Effects despite the disruption, but Lindo felt BAFTA should have followed up with them to discuss what happened.
A controversial moment at the BAFTAs sparked widespread anger online, with many viewers upset that the BBC didn’t censor the content despite the show being delayed for two hours. Hannah Bleacher, the production designer for Sinners, was one of those who criticized how the ceremony was handled. She also took issue with host Alan Cumming’s apology, which included the phrase “if you were offended,” arguing that it actually worsened the situation because viewers were, understandably, offended.
