David Derrick Jr. and John Aoshima Will Direct the Hello Kitty Movie

Despite the excitement surrounding the 2026 Sanrio Character Rankings, there’s some great news for Hello Kitty fans! David Derrick Jr. and John Aoshima, both experienced directors, are set to direct the upcoming animated Hello Kitty movie from Warner Bros. Both Derrick Jr. (who previously co-directed Moana 2) and Aoshima (co-director of Ultraman: Rising) have deals with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Ramsey Naito will also produce, alongside Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo., with Shelby Thomas overseeing the project. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2028, giving cinemas plenty of time to get ready for a delightful dose of cuteness!

What kind of adventures will Hello Kitty and her friends have in their first American movie? If it’s similar to Hello Kitty Island Adventure, expect a thrilling story about friendship and making amends – maybe even involving a daring jump from a plane! The script is currently being written by Jeff Chan, who wrote the romantic comedy Plus One, but Dana Fox, Katie Dippold, Adam Sztykiel, Jenny Jaffe, Lindsey Beer, and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson also worked on earlier versions. The initial idea for the movie came from Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, known for their work on Reno 911! and Night at the Museum. And if the writers need any creative suggestions, they should definitely ask Badtz-Maru – he’s something of a movie expert!
