Crimson Desert is a lengthy game. You might think you’re about to leave the Hernand region, but plenty of side quests will keep you there if you’re a completionist like me. Even if you focus on the main story, it will still take a significant amount of time to finish the game.
The game’s popularity stems from its vast amount of content and exploration opportunities, including leisurely horseback riding with the character Yann. Despite not appealing to everyone, it has sold over five million copies and currently boasts better player retention than the highly successful Elden Ring.
Players Prefer Staying In Pywel Over The Lands Between

According to Forbes, Crimson Desert has retained more monthly players after its launch than Elden Ring did. This is particularly impressive considering Elden Ring is widely praised for having one of the greatest open-world designs ever, making Pearl Abyss’s success with Crimson Desert even more notable.
If we only look at Steam numbers, more people have played Elden Ring at its peak than Crimson Desert. This isn’t unexpected, as Elden Ring is made by FromSoftware and is often called their greatest game. However, when comparing how many players each game had at its busiest point a month after release, Crimson Desert actually had more people playing.
Okay, so just because Crimson Desert hit a big milestone doesn’t mean it’s ‘better’ than Elden Ring, or that more people like it. There’s a lot to consider. Crimson Desert is definitely easier to pick up and play than Elden Ring, which is super challenging. But honestly, what’s really cool about Crimson Desert reaching this point is that it doesn’t have a ton of replay value – you can’t really change your playstyle with different classes or make different choices that drastically alter the game. It’s impressive they got this far despite that!
Players appear to be enjoying their time in Pywel much more than they did in the challenging world of The Lands Between.
