The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), a major funder of public television for almost 60 years, has decided to close down. Its board voted on January 5th to shut the organization rather than risk it being weakened by funding cuts from the Trump administration and becoming susceptible to political interference. The CPB – instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up watching PBS – will distribute its remaining money to public TV and radio stations, and to organizations that preserve historical media.
The news isn’t surprising, considering Congress recently approved President Trump’s budget cuts, which took $1.1 billion away from public media. While many knew the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) was facing difficulties, its decision to shut down completely, rather than be weakened and controlled by others, is particularly unfortunate.
While national organizations like NPR and PBS will likely manage with other funding, the current situation is severely damaging to local news stations across the country. Even though NPR and PBS will continue operating, they are feeling the pressure. Recently, America’s Public Television Stations, a nonprofit group, proposed a plan to potentially save all these organizations by seeking Republican support, but NPR’s CEO, Katherine Maher, opposed it. The plan would have required NPR to admit its reporting was biased, which she wouldn’t accept. In September, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) awarded a large grant to a media group that didn’t include NPR, leading NPR to take legal action. Though a settlement was reached in November, the dispute highlighted a breakdown in cooperation among public broadcasters as they struggled to survive. The CPB played a vital role in distributing funds and information widely, and its absence leaves the future of American public broadcasting looking uncertain and fragmented.
