A classic movie is coming back to cinemas this year, and this time it’s a completely new version that fans haven’t seen before.
A beautifully restored 4K version of the 1958 classic Horror of Dracula (often called just Dracula) will be shown in theaters this Halloween. The film will also be available to buy or rent for home viewing. This new cut includes footage that was previously removed by censors and distributors, and was recently found in a Warner Bros. warehouse.
When the classic horror film first came out, news reports said some people actually fainted during particularly violent scenes. The sight of Christopher Lee as Dracula biting into his victims, with blood clearly visible, was especially shocking for audiences in the late 1950s. This was the first Dracula movie filmed in full color, and the realistic blood proved too much for some viewers. As a result, the full, uncut version of the film was only widely released in Japan.
John Gore, who now heads John Gore Studios and owns the Hammer Horror Films label, explains that the iconic fangs were what truly frightened audiences in the classic films. He says people were meant to scream, and that the image of fangs we often see on Halloween is a direct result of Hammer Horror and Christopher Lee’s influence.
