You only have a few days left to stream Chris Evans and a fantastic cast in a movie on Tubi before it’s gone at the end of April. While Chris Evans is known for sci-fi roles like the Human Torch, Captain America, and Buzz Lightyear, one of his best performances was in a mind-bending sci-fi thriller from 2007, directed by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, who he’s worked with often.
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the team behind the hit film 28 Days Later and its follow-ups, created another standout movie called Sunshine. Featuring a fantastic cast including Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Yeoh, Sunshine is currently available to stream online for free, but only for a limited time!
Sunshine Is Leaving Tubi at the End of April
Released in theaters on April 6, 2007, Sunshine marks the third collaboration between director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. They had previously worked together on the film adaptation of Garland’s novel, The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton, and on 28 Days Later. Despite being a strong film, Sunshine hasn’t received the attention it deserves and remains somewhat underrated.
Several science fiction films will be removed from Tubi in April 2026, including titles like Event Horizon, Under the Skin, Dredd, and The Golden Compass. However, Sunshine—a critically acclaimed film from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland—is a particularly noteworthy loss. If you haven’t seen it, or want to watch it again, you only have a few days left to stream it on Tubi.
Danny Boyle initially envisioned a trilogy of films, all written by Alex Garland, with each movie revolving around the sun. However, these plans were abandoned after Sunshine didn’t perform well in theaters, earning just $34.8 million despite costing $40 million to make. It’s unfortunate we never got the full trilogy, but Sunshine remains a compelling and often overlooked sci-fi thriller, and is definitely worth checking out even now, 19 years later.
Sunshine Is an Underrated Sci-Fi Thriller From Danny Boyle & Alex Garland
The film Sunshine follows the crew of the starship Icarus II, sent on a desperate mission to reignite the dying sun with a massive stellar bomb. By 2057, Earth is gripped by a catastrophic global freeze, and a previous attempt to save the sun, by the Icarus I, failed seven years earlier. When the Icarus II detects a distress signal from the lost ship, they change course, hoping to increase their odds of success by combining their resources and using two bombs.
Chris Evans played physicist and bomb operator Robert Capa. Following his appearances in two Fantastic Four films, Sunshine further boosted his career, with Evans starring as engineer James Mace. The film also featured a strong supporting cast, helping to launch the careers of actors like Mark Strong, who played the isolated captain of the Icarus I, Pinbacker.
Even after nearly two decades, Sunshine remains a surprisingly overlooked science fiction gem. The film powerfully explores complex ideas like death, climate change, and the boundaries of the human psyche, offering deeply moving and realistic characters. Combined with stunning visuals and thrilling action, these elements are hallmarks of films by , and can be found in other movies available after Sunshine departs from Tubi.
What to Watch If You Missed Sunshine on Tubi
If you missed watching Sunshine on Tubi before it’s gone at the end of April, don’t worry! There are plenty of other great movies you can enjoy that share similar themes. The 28 Days Later series, also a collaboration between Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, has a similar feel. Plus, science fiction films like First Man, The Midnight Sky, Gravity, Moon, and Ad Astra all explore ideas of loneliness, confinement, and journeys into space, just like Sunshine.
With Ryan Gosling set to star, the upcoming 2026 science fiction movie shares a similar vibe to the film Sunshine. Project Hail Mary centers on Grace, an astronaut sent into space to investigate a strange life form called “astrophage” that’s eating stars—and to try and save the sun from being extinguished, which would cause a global ice age. Interestingly, Project Hail Mary feels like a backstory to Sunshine even though the two stories aren’t officially connected.
Good news for fans of Project Hail Mary – it’s staying in cinemas a bit longer instead of going straight to streaming, giving you more chances to see it on the big screen! It would pair nicely with a showing of Sunshine, and while we wait for Danny Boyle and Alex Garland to work together again, Sunshine is a great film to enjoy in the meantime.
