Charlie Hunnam became well-known for playing Jax Teller in the TV series Sons of Anarchy, a role he held for six years. He also appeared in films by acclaimed directors, including Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur, and The Gentlemen. While this isn’t a complete list of his work, these are definitely some of his most recognizable roles.
Charlie Hunnam hasn’t had many major projects lately. Following a busy 2019 with four film releases, the actor’s on-screen appearances decreased. Since 2020, he’s starred in three productions: Last Looks, Shantaram, and Rebel Moon. After filming Rebel Moon, Hunnam took a two-year break to heal from an injury and also began writing screenplays.
Good news! Charlie Hunnam is back on screen, and he’s starting with a role in one of Netflix’s most well-known-and talked-about-shows, Monster. He’ll be playing Ed Gein (via Sensacine).
In a recent in-depth interview with Variety, the actor revealed he immediately accepted the role in Ryan Murphy’s latest project. In fact, he didn’t even need to see the script. A two-hour discussion with Murphy was all it took. At the end of their conversation, Murphy offered him the part, simply asking, “If you want to play him…” Charlie Hunnam readily agreed, feeling he had no choice after being so impressed by Murphy.
I didn’t expect him to be cynical, but his genuine, youthful excitement for telling stories was clear. He was simply extremely enthusiastic.
Charlie Hunnam wasn’t alone in committing to season three of Monster without seeing the script. Laurie Metcalf, who portrayed Gein’s mother, also agreed to participate without reading it first.
Ryan’s description of the project was truly captivating, but it requires a significant amount of trust for an actor to commit to a role without reading even a single line of the script – it’s a real leap of faith.
Charlie Hunnam really dedicated himself to the project. Recordings of Ed Gein are rare, especially those that have been released to the public. Nevertheless, Hunnam was able to obtain some tapes, and these proved invaluable in preparing for his role in Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
Ed Gein isn’t the only project actor Charlie Hunnam has coming up. Criminal also features him as Leo Patterson. This TV series is inspired by the crime comics created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the show on Prime Video.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story will be available on Netflix on October 3.
