CBS Confirms the End of Matlock Despite Season 3 Renewal

The final episode of Matlock wraps up Madeline “Matty” Matlock’s long-running plan to get justice against the Jacobson Moore law firm, bringing the series as viewers knew it to an end. Throughout the first two seasons, Kathy Bates’ character went undercover to expose the lawyers who concealed evidence about dangerous pharmaceuticals, potentially preventing the opioid crisis.

Throughout Season 2 of Matlock, Madeline and Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) team up and update Julian Markston (Jason Ritter) on their investigation. They all decide to focus their efforts on bringing down Senior (Beau Bridges), believing they have enough evidence. The season culminates in a final episode where they confront Senior, revealing a surprising twist in Madeline’s carefully laid plan.

Matlock Season 2’s Finale Is The End Of Matlock As Audiences Know It

Everything wraps up as Julian takes responsibility for his and his father’s actions. Even though he loses legal protection and admits his involvement, Markston secretly works with FBI agent Lida Gutierrez (Gina Rodriguez) right before his father’s retirement speech to ensure a confession is made.

Julian convinced Senior to admit their involvement and expose the other leaders at Jacobson Moore, revealing they all participated in hiding the truth about Wellbexa. Thanks to Markston’s cooperation, Madeline and Olympia can close the case without being investigated further. Senior and Markston’s confessions provide the FBI with enough evidence to arrest the entire executive board, who were all present when the merger took place.

Once Madeline says goodbye to her daughter, Ellie Kingston, she’s ready to close the case. She suggests dropping it because Senior returned the Wellbrexa files, weakening their ability to prosecute. While it seems the show will end there, Matlock still has one last surprise for viewers.

With Madeline and Olympia leaving Senior’s retirement party and Julian getting a confession, Matlock reveals Markston refused to drop the charges, and that Senior had been secretly recorded. As the FBI raids the building and arrests the partners at Jacobson Moore, Madeline completes her mission, leading the show to change its focus.

Matlock Will Feel Like A Different Show When It Returns For Season 3

With the arrest of Senior and his partners at Jacobson Moore, the last episode of Matlock Season 2 effectively marks the end of the show as viewers have known it. It wraps up the storyline involving Madeline, Olympia, and Julian, and the next season will move on to new cases and a different format, building on the events of Season 2’s finale.

Julian accepting the blame protects Madeline and allows her to keep her law career. She’ll continue using the name “Matlock,” preserving her secret double life – a central part of the show. This sets the stage for season three of Matlock, which CBS has already ordered.

The show Matlock is expected to shift its focus to Madeline and Olympia starting their own law firm, now that Edwin has agreed to let them stay. The season finale hinted at this with a playful debate about the firm’s name – “Lawrence & Matlock” or “Matlock & Lawrence” – suggesting their next career move will involve taking on large corporations and holding them accountable.

CBS is adjusting its Thursday night lineup for the 2026-2027 television season. As a result, the upcoming season of Matlock might have fewer episodes than the first two seasons. However, this shorter season could work well as the show changes direction and explores a new storyline.
