
Microsoft recently laid off thousands of employees and, as a result, canceled the upcoming Perfect Dark game. They also shut down The Initiative, the studio that was developing it.
Darrell Gallagher, the head of the studio behind Perfect Dark and The Initiative, has written a farewell message about those projects and announced he is leaving Microsoft.
After a fantastic run, I’ve left Xbox following the conclusion of work on Perfect Dark and The Initiative. I’m incredibly proud of the skilled and dedicated team I built and led. We worked hard to revitalize a beloved franchise, putting a lot of creativity and effort into everything we did. The positive response and excitement from fans meant a lot to all of us.
Gallagher believes the developers’ dedication, skills, and accomplishments will have a lasting impact, even after the project is finished.
Gallagher expressed feeling proud of everything the team achieved and enthusiastic about the future-for both his own career and the talented developers he worked alongside. He wished everyone well and celebrated their shared experiences.
I’ve been following Lee Gallagher’s career for years, and it’s seriously impressive! He started way back at Rockstar as a lead artist, then moved to THQ as an art director. After that, he had a big role at Crystal Dynamics, eventually becoming head of studio, and then even higher up at Square Enix overseeing product development and all their studios. He was a big part of the Call of Duty team at Activision for a while, and then in 2018, he joined Xbox to build The Initiative from the ground up and start working on the new Perfect Dark – I’m so excited to see what they’re doing!
Just before the first gameplay footage was shown, reports indicated the Perfect Dark reboot was struggling and hadn’t fully coalesced, even with assistance from co-developer Crystal Dynamics. Take-Two Interactive, the company behind Grand Theft Auto, reportedly considered intervening to help, but a potential agreement ultimately fell through.
Microsoft recently announced layoffs impacting several of its gaming divisions. While The Initiative studio was completely shut down, other teams weren’t spared – ZeniMax Online (The Elder Scrolls Online), Blizzard, Turn 10 (Forza), and Raven Software (Call of Duty Black Ops 7) all experienced job cuts. Additionally, Rare has canceled its game project, Everwild.
