A cafe in Sweden recently gained attention online after people claimed it was fully operated by the Gemini AI system. However, despite the AI’s involvement, the cafe still relies on human staff for certain tasks.
Artificial intelligence is showing up more and more in various industries, and restaurants are no exception. From fast-food chains like McDonald’s using AI to take orders, to high-end restaurants personalizing the entire dining experience with AI, the technology is changing how we eat out.
Surprisingly, a few restaurants have been forced to shut down because they depended too much on AI and couldn’t find enough people to help them operate.
I’ve been seeing all the buzz about this place in Sweden, Andon Cafe, and how it’s supposedly run entirely by AI. But it turns out that’s not really true! It’s been a bit of a misunderstanding.
Cafe goes viral and it’s an AI experiment
The cafe first opened on April 18th, but it started gaining attention on X (formerly Twitter) on April 22nd when a user named jlagerros shared their experience after visiting.
Rumors circulated that the restaurant was powered by Claude AI, but that’s incorrect. According to Adafruit, it’s actually running on the Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview bot.
Plus, Andon Cafe still relies on staff to prepare and serve orders. They offer a variety of drinks like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, along with a limited food menu.
The location is great – it’s in a quiet part of Stockholm’s SoHo. However, it was hard to find because there aren’t any signs outside!

Jlagerros mentioned the restaurant has an AI ‘CEO’ named Mona, who can be contacted by email or phone. However, Mona isn’t perfect and sometimes makes errors, like ordering too much of things they don’t need.
Just got a huge delivery – apparently the cafe manager ordered 3000 nitrile gloves! The bartender told me this is a pretty regular thing, happening almost daily. Then he showed me their toilet paper stash… it’s seriously huge for a place that gets, like, one customer an hour. It’s kinda wild.
So, the bartender explained this kind of thing happens pretty much daily. Then he showed me their toilet paper supply – and wow, it was shockingly low, especially considering they only get about one customer an hour! It really put things into perspective.

Kajetan, a barista, described working with the AI system to Sveriges Radio, saying it sometimes feels like assisting someone with dementia, as all the instructions come from the AI.
The cafe features a screen explaining that all staff are employees of Andon Labs, and that the cafe itself is part of an experiment run by the company. The screen also displays the cafe’s current profits and overall financial status.
Some social media users have urged interested parties to visit other cafes in the area.
