Bruce Willis’ Gasoline Alley Finds Redemption on Paramount+

The movie Gasoline Alley, a late-career work by a beloved actor, is now gaining appreciation thanks to its availability on a streaming service. This follows a disappointing initial release in 2022, four years ago.

At the beginning of the month, Gasoline Alley wasn’t a major streaming hit. But it quickly gained popularity, almost reaching the top spot on Paramount+’s list of most-watched movies in the U.S. (according to FlixPatrol). It’s currently in second place, even pushing Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick down the list. The number one movie is the horror film Primate, which was added to Paramount+ after being released in theaters in January.

Bruce Willis Co-Starred With Devon Sawa and Luke Wilson

Edward John Drake, known for films like Paradise City and Guns Up, directed Gasoline Alley. The movie stars Bruce Willis alongside Devon Sawa and Luke Wilson. Sawa plays Jimmy Jayne, the owner of a tattoo shop called Gasoline Alley, which becomes connected to a mass murder investigation. Detectives Bill Freeman (Willis) and Freddy Vargas (Wilson) question Jimmy after evidence links the shop to the crime. However, the investigation takes a surprising twist when one of the detectives themselves comes under suspicion.

The movie didn’t play in many theaters, earning only about $32,000. It became available to rent or buy online at the same time. When it was first released, critics generally disliked the film, giving it a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But viewers disagreed with the critics, as the audience score is much higher at 69%. Now, with a new audience discovering it on Paramount+, the film is finding a bit of a comeback.

Gasoline Alley Is One of Bruce Willis’ Final Films

Bruce Willis stopped acting in 2022 after his family revealed he was diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to understand language. Before this announcement, he was very active, appearing in twelve films that year. One of his final roles was in Gasoline Alley. He later collaborated with the director of Gasoline Alley, John Edward Drake, on three Detective Knight movies, where he played the lead detective.

Bruce Willis’s health took a turn in 2023, and he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. His wife, Emma Heming Willis, provides updates on his condition through social media, and continues to be his primary caregiver. His former wife, Demi Moore, and other family members regularly visit and spend time with him, especially during birthdays and holidays. Their daughter, Rumer Willis, occasionally shares updates about her father and their family with fans.
