Since Blue Bloods ended, Tom Selleck hasn’t been in the new sequel series, despite ongoing efforts to get him involved. Producers have repeatedly asked him to appear, hoping he’d join the show.
Sonequa Martin-Green, star of Boston Blue, recently told Women’s World that there’s been discussion about bringing actor Selleck into a spin-off series. It seems the decision now rests with Selleck, and producers have left the possibility open. Both sides agree that they would need a compelling storyline to justify his character’s appearance.
The Door Has Been Left Open for Tom Selleck’s Return
We’ve been discussing the possibility of Tom Selleck returning for a while now,” says Martin-Green. “He’s frequently asked about it, and as Donnie Wahlberg often points out, we’re open to it. We’d be thrilled to have him, but we want to ensure the storyline is fitting, as Tom rightfully insists on a good story – and we all should. I’m optimistic about whatever story we create if he joins us. I’d love to see the cast of Blue Bloods appear on our show, and it would be great to have Tom involved.
Donnie Wahlberg returns as his character Danny Regan from Blue Bloods in the new series Boston Blue, now set in Boston. The first season included appearances from several of his Blue Bloods co-stars, including Bridget Moynahan, Marisa Ramirez, Len Cariou, and Will Hochman. Marisa Ramirez will also be back as Baez for the second season.
Sonequa Martin-Green Wants More Blue Bloods Cameos
Speaking to TV Insider, Sonequa Martin-Green expressed her desire to see actors from Blue Bloods join Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. She wants to expand the show’s universe by continuing the legacy Blue Bloods created and bringing in talent from that series to help enrich the storytelling.
We’re building on the success of Blue Bloods, and every appearance from cast or crew members of the original show really enhances what we’re doing. It brings a valuable history and authenticity to our work, and I encourage everyone involved to participate whenever possible.
Although Blue Bloods has ended, Frank Reagan, played by Tom Selleck, isn’t completely absent from the world of police dramas. His character was referenced several times in the first season of Boston Blue, and it’s unclear if he’ll actually appear on screen. Selleck was disappointed when CBS cancelled Blue Bloods, believing the show had more stories to tell. He’s also unsure if he’d want to reprise the role of Frank Reagan after the cancellation.
Last year, the actor said he wasn’t sure about taking on another show like Boston Blue. He feels his main purpose is to ensure Blue Bloods is remembered as an important part of TV history, but he doesn’t necessarily want to continue playing Frank Reagan. He also expressed confusion over CBS’s decision to cancel the show, pointing out that if you remove sports programming, Blue Bloods was actually one of the six most-watched shows on television.
Boston Blue is on CBS in Fall 2026.
