The game aiming to compete with Civilization has received its last update, as Paradox Development is ending its development of Millennia.
The latest installment in the *Sid Meier’s Civilization* series hasn’t been well-received since its release. Many fans were disappointed when it first came out, and after nearly eight months, they’re still questioning whether the issues will ever be resolved.
Honestly, even with its issues, I’m still really impressed with how well this game is doing! It’s pulling in way more players than a lot of other strategy games trying to compete with the *Civilization* series. For example, the highest number of people playing it each week is already bigger than the all-time peak for *Millennia*, which was a pretty ambitious 4X game from C Prompt Games.
Considering everything, it’s understandable that the developers released the eighth update for *Millennia* and stated it marks the end of active development for the game. They also won’t be continuing regular communication with the game’s community.
The complete list of changes in Update 8 is available on the official Paradox Interactive website. While not a massive update, developers have fixed several frustrating bugs and improved compatibility with mods created by the community.
It’s not surprising that the developers have decided to discontinue support for *Millennia*. While the game received generally positive feedback, a 68% approval rating wasn’t strong enough to guarantee its success. With player activity typically only peaking in the double digits, it’s understandable why Paradox decided to move on, especially considering they’re already dealing with issues in other games. This news, of course, isn’t welcome for the game’s dedicated fanbase.
Sad face. You had potential, guys, you were close, but you stopped just before the finish line.
I’m enjoying *Civ 7*, but it seems a lot of other players aren’t as excited about it. That’s a shame, because it could have been a good moment for a game like *Millennia* to really take off.
We absolutely loved this game – it felt like the best *Civilizationstyle game ever made! It’s incredibly disappointing that development stopped, because it had the potential to surpass the original *Civilization*. It feels like a missed opportunity, and we’re really disappointed, Paradox. We’ve been huge fans for years!
It’s no surprise, but it’s still a shame.
