Betty Boop Gets Reimagined for Modern Reboot 96 Years Later

After nearly a century, a beloved cartoon character is returning to the big screen. This will be the first time the iconic character has appeared in theaters in 87 years.

According to reports, Quinta Brunson, the creator of Abbott Elementary, is working on a new movie about Betty Boop, and she’s also going to star as the iconic character. The project is a collaboration between Brunson’s production company, Fifth Chance Productions, and Fleischer Studios, with Max Fleischer’s grandson, Mark Fleischer, involved as well.

Betty Boop Is Finally Returning to Movie Theaters

The upcoming film will tell the story of Betty Boop’s creation through the eyes of her creator, Max Fleischer. It will look at the challenges he faced balancing his artistic vision with commercial demands while building one of the earliest animation stars. The film also explores how Betty Boop seemed to develop a personality of her own. The project reimagines this classic character and considers how she might be relevant today.

According to Brunson, Betty Boop is a cherished cartoon icon who has surprisingly flown under the radar. She’s quietly influenced our culture for almost a century. After meeting with Mark and learning about his grandfather’s work creating Betty, Brunson felt there was a richer, untold story that deserved to be explored – a story that could feel modern, unexpected, and enduring, just like Betty Boop herself.

Mark Fleischer was amazed when Quinta approached him with the idea for a film about his grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his character, Betty Boop. He felt Quinta perfectly captured Betty’s spirit – her joy, intelligence, wit, confidence, and kindness – and that connection made the story feel incredibly vibrant from the start.

Betty Boop Is Nearly 100 Years Old

Betty Boop first appeared in the cartoon short Dizzy Dishes in 1930. Over the next nine years, she starred in a total of 90 theatrical cartoons before making her final film appearance in 1939. Though she hasn’t been in new cartoons since then, Betty Boop’s popularity has continued through comic books and TV specials. Most recently, she returned to the spotlight with Boop! The Musical, which premiered on Broadway last year.

Betty Boop is a famous cabaret singer instantly recognizable for her distinctive style – big eyes, short curly hair, and a classic flapper dress. Originally, she looked more like a cartoon dog, but her design evolved to be more human-like, though still very exaggerated. She became a symbol of the lively “Jazz Age,” blending the popular music of the time with playful, surreal humor and the energetic style of Vaudeville comedy.

A release date has not yet been set for the new Betty Boop movie.
