Watching the crew of the Katina this season has been amazing – everyone’s really come into their own! João’s become such a dependable second officer, and Betul’s confidence as a deckie has blossomed. I was especially impressed by Ellie, who went from doing dishes to actually making sushi! Now, as they wrap up the season and think about the future, things are getting… well, interesting. Alesia, for instance, believes she’s ready to be second stew. Honestly, her journey has been a rollercoaster! She started as a sous-chef, then was moved to help in the galley, which understandably upset her. She even asked to switch to the interior, where things weren’t always easy with Mike. But she’s great with guests, and now that he’s gone, she’s been able to really focus on her work and become a much more professional crew member. The question is, after everything, is that enough to earn a promotion?
This week’s episode explores what truly makes a job excellent, beyond just meeting the basic requirements. What distinguishes acceptable work from truly outstanding service? For example, simply serving fish is the minimum expectation, while expertly deboning it for guests goes above and beyond. Ben’s insistence on serving fish with bones, believing servers should be able to filet it at the table, is puzzling. He even criticized Daisy for not knowing how! It’s strange Ellie didn’t offer to help if it was so easy. Later, Jason gently pointed out the service was a little slow, but he didn’t dwell on it since the fish itself was delicious, despite the presentation issues.
As João put it, the conflict between Ben and Daisy was a clash of strong personalities. Instead of working together to fix the issue with the fish, they both stubbornly insisted they were right, and ultimately, neither of them achieved their goal of providing good service. When Daisy asks João if Ben was complaining about her (which he was), João explains that Ben was just letting off steam, just like she is now. The tension between them escalated to the point where they couldn’t even discuss simple things, like the daily schedule. During dinner, the guests requested breakfast at 8 a.m., but Daisy accidentally told Ellie and Ben it would be at 9 a.m. Ellie corrected her, relaying information she’d received from Jason. It’s a terrible feeling to make a mistake while trying to prove you’re right, and things were made worse by Ben’s refusal to take charge and confirm the schedule with the guests himself. However, what really frustrated Daisy was that Ellie didn’t seem to respect her authority.
Even though the kitchen was chaotic, the evening was a success. Guests enjoyed the meal and didn’t mind the occasional fish bone. They were especially delighted when Jason playfully brought out Garrett’s birthday cake while dressed as Adam. When a guest asked Daisy about her second stew, and Daisy mentioned she didn’t have one, Alesia began to question why Jenna had a second stew and she didn’t. She felt confident she’d be a better second stew than Jenna had been.
Alesia won’t be getting promoted, but Ellie has a good chance. She volunteers to prepare breakfast for the guests, and despite a long list of tasks from Ben, she completes everything perfectly. Ellie believes this season has given her a new outlook, but it’s clear Ben’s perception of her abilities in the kitchen has changed. Impressed, Ben tells Jason he wants to promote Ellie to sous-chef. Daisy overhears this while bringing the captain coffee and is furious, confiding in Jenna that she’ll react strongly. Ben justifies the potential promotion by saying Ellie’s job has evolved to include cooking, but Jenna points out Ellie hasn’t yet cooked a full crew meal, only João’s birthday cake. Daisy also feels the promotion would be a deliberate snub, as Ellie has repeatedly challenged her authority without facing consequences.
I have to say, I’m with Jason on this one. Ben’s idea to promote Ellie feels way too soon, especially considering her recent meltdown just four shifts ago. Honestly, she’s been doing exactly what’s expected of her – both in terms of the job itself and trying to make up for past mistakes. Rushing a promotion after demoting Jenna could really hurt team morale, and it’s not like Ellie’s efforts are going unnoticed. Ben’s constantly praising her, and even her rival, Daisy, publicly acknowledged Ellie’s talent with the breakfast spread this morning! It’s gotten to the point where Jenna is jokingly asking if simply doing her job is now the standard for getting a promotion, hinting she wants her old position back. It’s a messy situation, and I think Jason is right to push back.
Okay, so things are getting interesting down here. Ben is totally leading Ellie on, calling her ‘chef’ and asking for sushi help even though the captain’s made it clear she’s not ready for that kind of responsibility. It’s a bit much, honestly. Meanwhile, Alesia is confiding in Barbie about being nowhere near a promotion to second stew – and Barbie is clearly the frontrunner if Jenna steps down. You can feel the tension there, Alesia knows she’s not quite up to par. And Daisy? She’s spot on. She told Alesia she needs to work on being more attentive, and moments later, Alesia nearly floods the jacuzzi! She went to cool it down, left the water running, and it started overflowing… still hot water, mind you! It was a comical disaster, and really underscored Daisy’s point. Alesia definitely has some work to do before earning that second stripe.
Arguments between the kitchen and service staff are getting worse, especially during lunch. A miscommunication over the radio – when someone told the kitchen to send out the salad first, and Daisy curtly told them to handle it themselves or ask for help – sparked another conflict. Jason and João overheard and expressed concern. Ellie used the situation to highlight her own contributions to the meal. Luckily, the guests remained happy, giving both Daisy and Ben rave reviews and a generous $23,000 tip, which meant $1,700 each for the crew. Despite the positive feedback, Jason advised Daisy and Ben to work on their communication. He also gave Eddy the “disco helmet” as a playful reprimand for letting personal problems affect his work. Jason, and most of the crew, believe Jenna knows she’s been acting up and it’s time to put it behind them.
The crew was surprised and upset when Jason announced they only had 24 hours to prepare for the next guests, instead of their usual two days off. Daisy called a meeting with her team to discuss feedback, asking Barbie for the guest comment cards. However, Ben was still reading them and wouldn’t share. Frustrated, Daisy went to ask him directly, but he still refused. Annoyed, she told the interior team to start working, predicting Ben and Ellie would relax for a few hours before returning to the galley. True to her prediction, after finally handing over the cards, Ben and Ellie went to take a nap.
I woke up to Jason calling everyone to a final meeting about their preferences. Brandon and Carmen showed up, and honestly, they’re a bit much – always bringing photographers everywhere, even to dinner! They’ve been here before, and last time, Brandon almost got kicked off the boat for swimming while drunk. Daisy couldn’t believe Jason let them return. Later, Daisy asked João if he’d support her when she talked to Ben about why Ellie shouldn’t get promoted, and he agreed to if he thought it was necessary. It’s been really sweet seeing Daisy and João get closer since they finally talked about what their relationship is. They’ve been sharing a bed and even kissing at dinner, which Ben clearly doesn’t appreciate. It feels like João was already leaning towards siding with Daisy, but now, after getting so close to her, there’s no question where his loyalty lies.
It was really nice to see Eddy and Jenna start to mend things during the charter. Eddy felt awful about letting his emotions get the better of him and even felt partly to blame for Jenna losing her rank. He apologized for her demotion, and over dinner, Jenna took full responsibility for what had happened – she was really owning up to it! But then Alesia stepped in, asking them to just try and enjoy the evening and be present, because their last night out as a crew was…tense, to say the least. Ellie chimed in too, telling them to stop being such a downer. They had a little disagreement, but it quickly passed. Meanwhile, I couldn’t help but notice Ben and Barbie slowly edging their table away from everyone else throughout dinner. It was a running joke, and by the end, they were practically on a different island – at least three feet away from the rest of us!
It really bothers me that everyone is ordering espresso martinis when they have to work so early! The night started okay, with João telling Alesia how much she’s improved, and Ellie falsely telling Eddy that Daisy is the only one with issues in their conflict. João’s compliment gave Alesia the courage to ask Daisy why she doesn’t think she’s suited to be second stew. Daisy explained that Alesia needs to learn to stay calm and composed, saying that simply appearing busy doesn’t mean you’re working harder. Alesia eventually agreed with Daisy’s assessment that she wasn’t ready, and they made up with a hug and an ‘I love you.’ I wish Ben and Daisy’s conversation could end so nicely…
Watching Ellie and Jenna argue made Daisy realize she needed to talk to Ben. She asked him to step aside for a conversation, but he refused, saying he wasn’t discussing work matters at that moment and would wait until morning. He later admitted to feeling like he was being scolded by a strict nanny. Their conversation quickly escalated into an argument, and Ben walked back to the boat. Jenna followed him, though it wasn’t clear if she was trying to comfort him, warn him about Ellie, or support Daisy. She ended up seeing him enter an empty guest cabin. She pleaded with him not to go in, explaining that guests would be arriving in less than 13 hours and the cabins needed to be ready. However, Ben insisted on sleeping in a comfortable bed and locked the door behind him.
Ben claims it’s no problem to sleep in a prepared guest cabin, but it’s actually undermining the interior team’s work. It’s similar to a stew messing with the chef’s food. He used to check with Daisy before doing this, so he knows he’s crossing a line. Daisy is completely fed up with Ben and barely reacts when she finds out he’s in a made bed, simply telling Alesia to deal with it. She doesn’t want to argue with him because she knows he won’t listen. João steps in, feeling Ben is being disrespectful to everyone. He wakes up an engineer to get access to the cabin, and Ben is immediately upset when confronted. João explains that charter guests expect a fresh bed, but Ben quickly becomes hostile, using profanity. João loses his temper, demanding Ben never speak to him that way again. The situation escalates as Ben refuses to move, lying in the bed and continuing to curse at João. He vows to remember this incident. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, and with only one charter remaining, it’s unclear if everyone can resolve their issues.
