Now is a fantastic time to be a Batman fan! Titles like Absolute Batman, World’s Finest, and the main Batman series are all receiving excellent reviews. Writer Matt Fraction has also shared his thoughts on DC Comics’ Absolute Universe line.
Both the Batman series by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez, and the Absolute Batman series by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, exist in separate worlds, but it’s natural to expect some rivalry between them. Healthy competition can push creative work from good to truly exceptional, much like how sharpening one piece of iron with another makes both stronger. These two Batman titles can benefit from that same dynamic.
Matt Fraction, speaking on the GateCrashers podcast, expressed excitement about the current landscape of Batman comics. He feels there’s a lot of variety in different interpretations of the character, making it accessible to a wide range of fans. He compared it to having a diverse and appealing menu of options. Fraction also praised the work Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta are doing, saying it inspires him to improve his own work and fuels healthy competition. He noted the contrast between their approaches and his, ultimately concluding it’s a fantastic time to be involved with Batman.
Duelling Batman Series Have Been A Treat For Comic Book Fans
One of the most interesting things about Batman comics right now is how distinct the two series are. Absolute Batman presents a Bruce Wayne who’s facing financial hardship, alongside an Alfred who’s a skilled agent with a firearm. Meanwhile, the main Batman title focuses on self-contained stories that fit into the broader DC Universe.
Nick Draggota’s Batman features a fresh design with strong influences from manga, particularly evident in how he lays out each panel. In contrast, Jorge Jiménez’s Batman has a more traditional look that aligns with most fans’ expectations. Despite these differences, both artists deliver authentic interpretations of the character.
The Batman comic book run by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez began in 2025 with a series of stories that connected in surprising ways. While it was a hit with readers, it’s often considered slightly less impactful than Absolute Batman.
The first comic book I ever read was Batman, when I was just three and a half years old – and that’s why I’m so passionate about comics. When Chip Zdarsky announced he was stepping down, he asked if I had any ideas. I said I did, even though I didn’t have a specific plan yet or know what my take on Batman would be. But as soon as I started thinking about it, I got really excited to write it,” Matt Fraction explained in an interview with AIPT.
Matt Fraction is a rare talent in comic books, achieving success with independent titles as well as major publishers like Marvel and DC. He’s known for both his creator-owned work and his exciting Batman stories, and fans appreciate the range of his skills across different series.
All Batman titles are available for purchase wherever comic books are sold.
