The producer of Resident Evil: Requiem said that the team at Capcom, who make the Resident Evil games, have considered taking place in Japan.
Over the last few years, Japan has become a hugely popular location for video games, appearing in everything from the scary world of Silent Hill f and the action-packed Ghost of Yotei, to the exciting races of Forza Horizon 6.
Plus, another samurai game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, might be revealed at this week’s State of Play. It’s safe to say we’re seeing a renewed interest in Japanese-inspired games right now.
While Resident Evil hasn’t been released in Japan yet, producer Masato Kumazawa is actively exploring the possibility.
Resi devs have considered setting game in Japan
The Resident Evil series, similar to Silent Hill (though Silent Hill f is an exception), mainly takes place in Western countries and features European-inspired environments, even though it’s developed in Japan.
Capcom sometimes experiments with new settings – Resident Evil 5 took place in Africa, and the sixth game had a short stop in China. However, despite all their adventures, Leon and the team haven’t yet fought zombies in Japan, and the developers are aware of that.
Kumazawa shared in an interview with Futaman that a Japan-based ‘Resident Evil’ game is something many fans, including himself, have long envisioned.

He explained that because the game series is mainly created by a team in Japan, everyone involved has likely thought about this possibility. He then hinted that it might be included in a future installment.
Despite being a popular request, a main game in the series hasn’t actually taken place in Japan yet, though it’s possible that could change in a future installment.
Although it’s not a guarantee, the possibility of a future Resident Evil game taking place in Japan is thrilling. It sounds like the creators might be inspired by the horror of Silent Hill and set a zombie outbreak in Tokyo.
