Avengers: Endgame finished the major storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s still worth watching again before seeing Doomsday. It’s amazing to think it’s been seven years since the movie first came out! Endgame was a fantastic experience, full of unforgettable scenes like Captain America using Mjölnir and the heroes arriving through portals to fight Thanos. It was also a huge commercial success, earning about $2.8 billion around the world.
Avengers: Endgame will be back in movie theaters on September 25, 2026, potentially boosting its total box office earnings. Director Joe Russo announced at the Sands Film Festival (according to Deadline) that this re-release will include new footage that connects to the upcoming film, Doomsday, which is scheduled to come out on December 18, 2026.
The filmmakers see a chance to connect the stories of ‘Endgame’ and ‘Doomsday’ in a special way. Because ‘Endgame’ did so well, they can also release it again. Re-releases aren’t always possible due to the expense, but this allows them to expand on the ‘Doomsday’ story and continue the journeys of beloved characters they’ve developed over many years – it’s a rare and exciting opportunity.
Russo described the re-release as a story that provides important context and prepares audiences for Avengers: Doomsday, which comes out in December. Even though this new footage will strengthen the connection between Endgame and the next Avengers film, Endgame already contains several details that make it a worthwhile rewatch before seeing Doomsday.
Avengers: Endgame Introduces The Concept Of The Multiverse
As a huge Marvel fan, I always knew Endgame was more than just a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Looking back, it cleverly laid the groundwork for everything we’re seeing now with the Multiverse Saga. The movie introduces this idea that time isn’t fixed, thanks to Ant-Man’s trip into the Quantum Realm. Basically, it opens the door for the Avengers to jump around through time to collect the Infinity Stones. We get to see some iconic moments revisited – the Battle of New York from The Avengers, a glimpse of Asgard, and even trips to Morag and Vormir, plus a fun detour to the 1970s! It’s amazing how much they packed into that film and how it all connects now.
Unlike movies like Back to the Future, where changing the past changes the future, this film handles time travel differently. Here, altering the past doesn’t change the main timeline – it creates a brand new, separate one. The Ancient One explains that the Infinity Stones control the flow of time, and removing one causes that flow to split. That’s why Captain America returns each stone to its original time at the end of the movie, ensuring the main timeline remains intact.
The different realities we see all exist within a single, stable timeline – known as the Sacred Timeline – which is further explored in the show Loki. But if timelines split or branch off, it can threaten the existence of a reality, and that’s why Captain America had to return the Infinity Stones in Endgame. Though brief, this scene is actually very important for understanding the larger Multiverse Saga and how the MCU’s multiverse works. It highlights the risks of timeline disruptions, something that could become critical in future events, potentially even in Doomsday.
Endgame Sets Up Loki’s New Storyline
Although Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame brought him back to life and gave him a chance to become a hero. During the battle, Hulk accidentally dislodged the Tesseract, and Loki seized the opportunity to escape with it. However, in the Loki series, his escape is quickly stopped by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), who arrest him for disrupting the established timeline.
When Loki escaped, he caused the timeline to split, making him a “time variant” – someone who existed outside the established, single timeline. The Disney+ show Loki explains that this single timeline was artificially created by He Who Remains, a version of Kang the Conqueror, to prevent a war between different versions of himself. But when Sylvie killed He Who Remains, the timeline fractured, leading to multiple branching realities.
To prevent the destruction of different timelines, Loki now watches over them, ensuring they remain stable, while the TVA focuses on controlling the various versions of Kang. Loki will be back in Doomsday, and he might be crucial in preventing Doctor Doom from causing chaos across the multiverse. While his new role might seem strange to viewers unfamiliar with the Loki series, Endgame reveals the events that led him to this point in Doomsday.
Steve Rogers’ Ending Could Be Important For Doomsday
The movie Endgame gave a conclusive ending to the stories of three of the first Avengers: Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America. Iron Man gave his life to destroy Thanos and his army by using the power of all six Infinity Stones, Black Widow sacrificed herself so Hawkeye could obtain the Soul Stone, and Captain America chose to live out his life with Peggy Carter after traveling back in time. Despite this, Steve Rogers’ story isn’t truly over, as he will be appearing in Doomsday.
The initial trailer for Doomsday revealed Steve Rogers has a family now, returning to his home with a child. Marvel hasn’t shared how he came back yet, and it’s unclear if he’ll reprise his role as Captain America—Sam Wilson has already taken on that responsibility. However, the Russo brothers told Empire (as reported by Den of Geek) that Steve will be a key character in the movie.
Given the way the multiverse works in the story, Steve Rogers’ choice at the end could significantly impact the plot of Doomsday. If Loki’s escape created a new timeline, then Steve staying with Peggy could have done the same – unless it was always meant to happen. Either way, his decision might have either destroyed an existing reality or started a whole new one.
Doctor Doom might appear, intrigued by the changes to the timeline caused by Steve Rogers. He could also be interested in Steve’s son, potentially seeing a similar potential in him as he does in Franklin Richards, the child of Sue and Reed Richards. We’ll learn more about Doomsday closer to the movie’s release, but it looks like Steve’s fate in Avengers: Endgame could play a role in the events of Doomsday.
