American Fantasy TV Shows You Need to Stream Right Now

Creating a successful TV show is always a risk, especially with the high costs and effort involved in building entirely new worlds. However, when a show delivers a captivating story, memorable characters, and a truly immersive experience, it has the potential to become a lasting fantasy classic.

American fantasy shows are packed with exciting elements like dragons, magic, mythical creatures, vampires, and even talking animals. The fantasy genre is incredibly diverse, including everything from epic high fantasy to modern urban fantasy, darker tales, and romantic adventures. Plus, they’re all readily available to watch online.

Sweet Tooth Is A Tender, Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

The story is inspired by Jeff Lemire’s comic books and centers around a catastrophic event called The Great Crumble. This was caused by the H5G9 virus, which decimated the majority of the human population.

I’m really invested in this story about Gus! He’s a young boy, but he’s not quite human – he’s a deer-human hybrid, and there are others like him all over the world who are often in danger. When his father passes away, he bravely sets out to find his mother. It’s heartbreaking because he’s so vulnerable, but thankfully he meets a kind man named Tommy Jepperd who steps in to protect him during this incredibly risky journey. I’m rooting for them both!

Despite taking place in a dark and challenging world, Sweet Tooth is a genuinely touching story, largely thanks to the close relationship between its main characters. The show also stands out visually, making it a uniquely captivating fantasy series. You can watch Sweet Tooth on Netflix.

Game of Thrones Is A Fantasy Essential

No discussion of American fantasy television is complete without mentioning George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones. The show brilliantly blended complex political intrigue with epic dragons and a richly detailed history.

The series Game of Thrones began during the reign of House Baratheon, following the stories of House Stark and the remnants of House Targaryen. While many noble families vied for power over the Iron Throne, Daenerys Targaryen stood out, famously bringing dragons back to life and liberating enslaved people.

Despite a disappointing conclusion and underutilized villains like the Night King, Game of Thrones was a truly captivating show, skillfully balancing broad storylines with the personal growth of characters like Jaime Lannister and Arya Stark. You can stream Game of Thrones on HBO Max.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Is The Disney Fantasy Do-Over The Story Deserved

Rick Riordan’s stories about Greek and Roman mythology are incredibly immersive. Fortunately, Disney+ adapted them into the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, ensuring the characters felt right for the age group and remaining true to the original books.

This fantasy novel is special because it blends ancient myths with the modern world, adding plenty of humor and heartfelt moments. Percy discovers he’s the son of Poseidon and heads to Camp Half-Blood to train. He and his friends, Annabeth and Grover, embark on exciting adventures and encounter all sorts of magical creatures along the way.

Like many stories about growing up, Percy Jackson explores themes of self-discovery and finding your place in the world. The recent Disney+ series is a comforting and thoughtfully made fantasy show.

House of The Dragon Goes Deeper Into Dragons And Their Magic

If you finished Game of Thrones and are craving more stories from Westeros, House of the Dragon is a great choice. It takes place hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones, showing the Targaryen family when they were at their most powerful.

House of the Dragon is set before a devastating civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which ultimately led to the Targaryen family’s decline. The series showcases the Targaryens’ strong connection to dragons and dragon magic from the very beginning, highlighting how this bond extends even to distant relatives and those born outside of traditional marriage.

It streams on HBO Max.

Wednesday Is Netflix’s Most Watched Fantasy Show

Tim Burton revisits the world of the Addams Family with a new series centered on Wednesday Addams, a darkly inclined teenager sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for students who are considered outcasts.

Wednesday quickly captured audiences with Jenna Ortega’s captivating performance as the darkly funny and surprisingly charming main character, whose rebellious side proved instantly engaging. The show also highlights Wednesday’s developing friendships, particularly with the bright and bubbly Enid, who offers a stark contrast. Beyond the characters, Wednesday delivers exciting new creatures and a compelling murder mystery.

The show features appearances from familiar faces from past films, like Christina Ricci, drawing in both longtime fans and new viewers. You can watch Wednesday on Netflix.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Is A Modern Classic

Vampires have been around for a long time. However, .

Buffy the Vampire Slayer centers around Buffy Summers, a teenager who must learn to accept her role as a hunter of vampires and other monsters while also navigating the everyday challenges of school and friendships. The show cleverly used these supernatural creatures and battles to represent the emotional struggles of the characters – things like heartbreak, anxiety, and the difficulties of growing up.

As a huge movie and TV buff, I always loved how Buffy the Vampire Slayer managed to be both dark and genuinely funny. It really mixed genres in a way that felt fresh, and honestly, a strong female lead like Buffy was a total standout back in the ’90s. If you’re looking for it, you can stream it on Hulu.
