A New Side Of Raccoon City Is Revealed In The Bloody Trailer For Resident Evil

Zach Cregger is giving evil a new face.

The director of the hit 2025 horror film is already working on a new movie: a fresh take on Resident Evil. Starring Austin Abrams, the film tells an original story within the Resident Evil universe. A sneak peek shown at CinemaCon in April revealed Abrams playing Bryan, a delivery driver caught in the chaos as Raccoon City falls. His simple delivery turns into a desperate struggle for survival when he encounters the terrifying creatures now roaming the city.

Sony recently launched the first trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil series. It opens with Bryan finding himself alone in a house during a snowstorm. He tries to call someone, explaining that their previous connection was cut short. The trailer then shows him running through the snow and preparing for danger, ultimately revealing his struggle for survival in Raccoon City. He’s relentlessly pursued by terrifying creatures as he attempts to escape, and the trailer concludes with a suspenseful scene of his attackers descending from above.

The new Resident Evil movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Joining the lead actor Abrams will be Paul Walter Hauser playing Carl, Zach Cherry as Dave, Kali Reis as Pauline, and Johnno Wilson as Max. With an $80 million budget, this is director Cregger’s most ambitious project yet – more than double the cost of his previous film, Weapons. Sony won the rights to the movie after a competitive bidding process against four other studios, and PlayStation Productions is also involved as a producer.

Following the success of his critically acclaimed film Weapons – which earned Amy Madigan an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress – Cregger’s new movie, Resident Evil, captures the same dark atmosphere as the popular video games. The trailer shows Bryan doing everything he can to survive, and hints at a compelling mystery. We see him discover a strange figure in the sewers and wonder what important delivery is driving him to risk his life amidst the city’s chaos.

The Resident Evil movies haven’t been critically acclaimed, often borrowing only pieces of the games’ stories and then going in their own direction. The new adaptation from Cregger is also expected to tell a fresh story set in Raccoon City, without using characters from the original games. However, the trailer hints at a genuinely frightening atmosphere that captures the feel of the Resident Evil games. Combined with Cregger’s clear love for the franchise, this version seems like it might finally be a faithful adaptation of the video games that inspired it.

The upcoming Resident Evil movie, set to release in a few months, looks to be a fresh start for the series on the big screen, delivering a scary story inspired by the popular video games. Sony has invested a significant amount of money in the film, signaling their confidence in its potential, and we’ll likely learn more as the release date approaches.
