Okay, fellow movie and TV lovers, get ready! One of the biggest things on BookTok – that super popular hockey romance series Game Changers by Rachel Reid – is finally becoming a show! It’s called Heated Rivalry, and I’m excited to share that it’ll be streaming on HBO Max here in the US and Australia. And naturally, since it’s all about hockey, it’s coming out of Canada first – you’ll be able to watch it on Crave up north.
Created by Jacob Tierney, known for Letterkenny, Heated Rivalry is a series based on the romance novels by Rachel Reid. It follows Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), two star hockey players who initially dislike each other but feel a strong connection. The show spans eight years, depicting their competitive journey for success in hockey alongside their developing, complicated feelings. As they pursue their careers, Shane and Ilya must grapple with whether a genuine romantic relationship can thrive in their intensely competitive world.
Hockey romance is a popular and thriving part of the romance genre, fitting in alongside fantasy romance, historical fiction, and even stories inspired by popular characters. Author Reina Reid says her novel, Heated Rivalry, draws inspiration from the famous competition between hockey stars Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, but also from other sports rivalries, classic stories, and beloved romance tropes like enemies-to-lovers and forbidden love. Fans can see how these elements come together when Heated Rivalry debuts on Crave and HBO Max on November 28th.
