The classic Superman villain, Brainiac, is coming to the DC Universe. David Corenswet, who plays Superman in James Gunn’s new DC franchise, will face off against him. This is just the beginning for Corenswet’s version of the Man of Steel, as DC Studios is already planning his next big adventure as part of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ storyline.
With Brainiac expected to be the big bad in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, artist @horrific.heroics created a fan-favorite casting visualization: Matt Smith, known for his role in Doctor Who, as Superman’s famous foe. You can see the artwork below!
I’m hearing some exciting news about the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film! Word on the street is Brainiac will be the big bad, and they’re aiming to start filming in April 2026. While they’ve likely already begun looking, no actors have been publicly mentioned as potential candidates to play the iconic DC villain just yet.
Brainiac has appeared in many Superman TV series, both animated and live-action, over the years. He’s particularly well-known for his roles in Smallville and Krypton, where he was portrayed by James Marsters and Blake Ritson.
Frank Grillo will return as Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming DCU movie, continuing the character’s story after appearing as a villain in season two of Peacemaker. Rachel Brosnahan is also confirmed to reprise her role as Lois Lane, and director James Gunn has hinted that she’ll have a significant part to play.
With David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the next DC Universe film will feature a major showdown against the villain Brainiac. This movie is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet for James Gunn’s DCU, pitting these two iconic rivals against a powerful enemy who collects entire worlds. DC Studios plans to reveal more characters – both familiar and new – as production nears.
Fans can look forward to more DC content with HBO’s Lanterns series expected in early 2026. In theaters, Supergirl and Clayface are scheduled for release on June 26th and September 11th, respectively. Production on The Batman – Part II will begin in 2026, with the film arriving on October 1, 2027.
James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow flies into theaters on July 9, 2027.
