The first season of Welcome to Derry (2025) is currently airing, and it’s already shared a lot of fascinating details about IT – the entity terrorizing the town of Derry, Maine for centuries. The show has explored IT’s backstory, the myths surrounding its arrival, and how Derry is connected to other stories by Stephen King, like The Shining. We’ve even learned what IT is most afraid of.
The series Welcome to Derry has helped clarify many confusing parts of the IT story. While it’s doing a great job of resolving some long-standing questions, it’s also raising new ones – like whether Maturin the Turtle will appear. This has led to fan theories, and one recent idea suggests a controversial character from Welcome to Derry could play a key role for the Losers’ Club in the future.
Marge Is One of the Most Frustrating Characters in Welcome to Derry
Marge, played by Matilda Lawler, is a student at Derry High and the best friend of Lilly Bainbridge (Clara Stack), who is a central character in the series. Lilly is a survivor of a traumatic event and carries emotional scars from her past. She experienced significant grief and mental health challenges after her father’s tragic death in an accident at a pickle factory, leading to a stay at the Juniper Hill Psychiatric Hospital – a place she fears returning to.
Although we haven’t seen much of Marge and Lilly’s friendship on screen, it’s clear Marge has been finding it difficult to support Lilly since her father’s accident. Marge really wants to be a good friend, but she’s unsure how to help someone dealing with so much trauma. This creates tension between them, and Marge even admits to Lilly that being her friend is challenging. Meanwhile, Marge also tries to connect with a group of popular girls she calls the “Pattycakes.”
Initially, Marge seems sincere in wanting to help Lilly adjust and feel accepted at school, even attempting to gain favor with the popular girls on Lilly’s behalf. However, when Marge discovers that befriending Lilly is hurting her own social standing, she considers ending the friendship to boost her popularity. This makes Marge a particularly disappointing character, as she demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice their bond. It’s easy to support a friend who’s struggling, but Marge frequently prioritizes her own desires and insecurities over Lilly’s emotional needs.
In Season 1, Episode 4, titled “The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function,” the Pattycakes trick Marge into playing a mean prank on Lilly. They convince Marge to try and embarrass Lilly in front of a boy she has a crush on. Marge almost tells Lilly what’s happening and makes things right, but she’s suddenly attacked by IT while in the school bathroom. During the attack, Marge becomes convinced her eyes are grotesquely swollen and even tries to gouge them out in a moment of extreme fear.
Marge Seems Like a Minor IT Character, But That’s an Illusion
Early portrayals of Marge focused heavily on how she saw herself compared to Lilly. It’s clear Marge struggles with self-doubt and really wants to be accepted by the popular crowd, fearing she’ll be left out. This insecurity causes her to make poor choices, which strains her friendship with Lilly, who is a key character in the story. Over time, Marge starts behaving more like a bully towards Lilly, and as this story is a horror, that foreshadows trouble for her.
The films even show Pennywise targeting bullies, demonstrating that no one can control him. Ultimately, everyone faces their fears, and those who are cruel, aggressive, or filled with hate are particularly vulnerable. Early episodes of the new series hint that Marge will suffer a similar fate, becoming another victim of Pennywise’s growing list.
The finale of Episode 4 hints that Marge might be a more crucial character than viewers initially thought. Following a traumatic experience that led to self-harm, the episode, titled Welcome to Derry, gives a glimpse of what’s ahead in the series. Marge appears to be heavily involved, even teaming up with Lilly and her friends to battle the strange force that’s feeding off their fear. In an interview, Matilda Lawler, who plays Marge, discussed Marge’s inner struggles, her fears, and how she eventually reconnects with Lilly.
Marge is really self-conscious, especially about her glasses. The movie allowed the creators to explore those insecurities, and the scary eye scene actually helps Marge look inward. It makes her think about her friendships and realize she truly belongs with Lilly and the other ‘Losers.’ Ultimately, it’s about her accepting who she is and finding her place, even if it’s not where others expect her to be, according to Lawler.
During the interview, co-creator Andy Muschietti hinted at a crucial reason behind Marge’s appearance. He explained that the significance won’t be revealed until the season’s final episode, confirming Marge plays a surprisingly important role in the story, which makes sense given the overall narrative.
This Wild Fan Theory Suggests That Fans Already Know Marge
Based on what we know about Marge, she’ll probably be a character throughout the first season of Welcome to Derry. Some fans of IT have noticed similarities between Marge and Margaret “Maggie” Tozier, who is Richie Tozier’s mother. Richie is a key member of the Losers’ Club and appears in Stephen King’s novel IT, the 1990 miniseries, and the 2017 movie adaptation.
Richie Tozier is a fan favorite member of the Losers’ Club. In the 2017 film IT, he’s portrayed as a quick-witted and sometimes brash kid who cares deeply for his friends. The film IT Chapter Two also delves into Richie’s sexuality and his affection for his best friend, Eddie Kaspbrak. Sadly, Eddie makes the ultimate sacrifice at the end of the movie, leaving Richie and the rest of the Losers’ Club heartbroken by his loss.
Maggie, Richie’s mother, doesn’t play a large role in the story, and she appears very little in IT. Because of this, fans don’t know much about her. She cares deeply for Richie and wants to protect him, though they sometimes struggle to connect. She’s occasionally wished she had a daughter, but she always loves and supports her son as best she can.
A popular fan theory proposes that Marge is actually Maggie. While both characters share the name Margaret, it seems odd that the show’s creators would make such a noticeable mistake. Although Marge damaged her eye in a previous episode – something Maggie doesn’t appear to have – there are ways to explain this difference. If this theory is true, it completely changes how fans view the original group of friends.
This suggests one of the Losers’ Club members is the child of someone who survived an encounter with Pennywise. If Marge survives the events of Welcome to Derry, it raises the question of why she wouldn’t leave town. Did she remain, believing Pennywise was truly gone for good, like the Losers’ Club at the end of IT Chapter Two? It’s possible she stayed to watch for the monster’s return and protect others.
The persistent fog surrounding Derry, which causes adults to forget the terrifying things IT does, probably also prevented Marge from leaving town. If this theory is correct, IT’s interest in Richie might not just be about his friendship with Bill and Georgie. It could stem from a lingering desire to finish what it started with Marge, who previously escaped IT.
