A few medical dramas consistently maintained high quality throughout their entire run. Shows like ER, Grey’s Anatomy, and House are among the best and have become staples of network television. The genre is well-suited for extended storylines, focusing on both the intense emergencies and the everyday details of hospital life.
Medical dramas are among the most enduring shows on television. Consider General Hospital, which has been a fixture on the air for over 50 years. Many of these shows offer truly excellent television, with examples like MASH, Nurse Jackie, and The Good Doctor* representing just a small portion of the quality available.
It’s rare for a long-running medical drama to be consistently good. With so many episodes over multiple seasons, some are inevitably weaker. If you’re looking for a medical show that never misses, your best bet is to find a shorter series, or something truly exceptional.
This Is Going To Hurt (2022)
This Is Going to Hurt is a British comedy-drama series based on Adam Kay’s 2017 memoir of the same name. The show, a co-production of the BBC and AMC, follows junior doctor Adam (played by Ben Whishaw) as he navigates the challenges of working in an obstetrics and gynecology ward at a London hospital in 2006.
The seven-part series, This Is Going to Hurt, offers a realistic and moving portrayal of life in obstetrics and gynecology, and the emotional challenges faced by hospital staff, especially junior doctors who often lack support. While Adam is the central character, the show also explores the lives of his colleagues, both at work and personally.
Despite being a serious drama, This Is Going to Hurt is surprisingly funny. The show constantly shifts between the mundane frustrations of hospital bureaucracy and genuinely heroic moments, which are often quickly overshadowed by the everyday challenges faced by the medical staff.
The Knick (2014-2015)
Few people know about The Knick, a compelling medical drama set in 1900 New York City. The 20-episode series, directed by Steven Soderbergh, takes place at the Knickerbocker Hospital, which actually existed and mainly treated patients who were poor or immigrants. Clive Owen plays the lead role of Dr. John “Thack” Thackery.
Dr. Thack is a brilliant and admired surgeon at the Knick hospital, but he secretly battles drug addiction, frequently using cocaine and opium. The show centers on Thack and his colleagues as they strive to provide the best possible care with the medical knowledge available to them at the time.
This series stands out with its detailed historical setting and thoughtful exploration of its characters. What makes it truly compelling is that the doctors and nurses at the hospital understand the limits of what they know. This creates a constant tension, as they struggle with their frustrations and push the boundaries of medicine, making for a captivating story.
St. Elsewhere (1982-1988)
Often considered one of the best TV shows of all time, St. Elsewhere stands out because every single one of its 137 episodes offers something worthwhile. The show takes place at a struggling hospital – St. Eligius – in a poor section of Boston.
St. Eligius Hospital, nicknamed “St. Elsewhere” due to its limited resources, serves as a last resort for patients who can’t afford better care. Even with its challenges, the hospital is home to dedicated and skilled doctors and nurses who provide the best possible treatment with what they have.
St. Elsewhere is a realistic and compelling medical drama known for its large cast and lifelike portrayal of a hospital. Ed Flanders plays Dr. Donald Wesphal, and he’s supported by a talented ensemble including Ed Begley Jr., Denzel Washington, and Howie Mandel. It’s a consistently entertaining show.
