The latest trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 shared unexpected information about William Afton’s past and officially confirmed that Skeet Ulrich will be playing a character in the movie.
The first film was Blumhouse’s most successful horror movie to date, earning $297 million in 2023. Based on the new trailer, the sequel promises to be even scarier and expand on the story.
If you’re new to the world of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, the story centers around Mike Schmidt, a security guard who works the night shift at the restaurant and has to survive against haunted animatronic characters. In the first movie, Josh Hutcherson plays Mike, and he’ll be back for the sequel. Matthew Lillard stars as William Afton, the person who built the animatronics.
A very quick scene in the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer reveals some new information about the history of the character Afton.
William Afton backstory teased in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer

Despite his character, Afton, dying in the first film while trapped inside the Springtrap suit, actor Matthew Lillard will reprise his role through flashback scenes. These flashbacks will reveal how Afton tormented his daughter, Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), during her childhood.
The story will delve into Freddy Krueger’s past, revealing how he killed children and hid their bodies inside the iconic suits long before the original movie. We’ll also learn that Skeet Ulrich’s character, Henry Emily, lost his own daughter to Krueger’s crimes.
Those familiar with the game series know Emily initially worked with Afton to build the company that created the notorious restaurant. A newspaper excerpt in the trailer reveals Afton was a gifted young inventor with big plans for his animatronics, intending to try out new concepts and technology.
The new footage includes a glimpse of Springtrap, who can be seen lurking with a knife inside the darkened restaurant. The trailer also reveals the older, decaying animatronics, known as the “Withered” in the game.
The scary robots don’t just go after Mike and Vanessa this time – they also start attacking people in town, which is a change from what happened in the last movie.
Fans immediately began speculating about how the movies might expand on the backstory of the character Afton within the game’s universe. One Reddit user pointed out a strange detail in a newspaper prop, suggesting that William Afton may have attempted to take sole credit for the creation of the characters and robots, deliberately excluding Henry from the record. They noted the complete lack of any mention of Henry in the newspaper felt suspicious.
One person commented that the action would be consistent with the character’s personality. Then, someone else proposed the movie could completely change how we understand Afton and Emily’s pasts. They pointed out the similarity between William’s clothes in a newspaper clipping and Henry’s in the games, suggesting a possible role reversal – perhaps Emily is the businessperson and William the engineer.
