On November 4th, Dancing With the Stars surprised viewers by having Flavor Flav as a guest judge for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night. Known for his enthusiastic support of Taylor Swift, the U.S. Olympic women’s rugby team, and anything else that catches his attention, Flav brought that same energy to the judging panel. Throughout the show, he complimented the couples’ teamwork and connection, and generously gave out high scores – mostly 9s and 10s – with his signature “Yeah boy!” Even Andy Richter, who had been receiving lower scores from the other judges, earned a 9 from Flav, just like top performer Alix Earle. Flav’s scoring reflected the general sentiment of new DWTS fans – everyone seems to be rooting for the remaining stars, and Richter deserved a high score simply for being likable.
Previous guest judges, like professional dancers Cheryl Burke and Kym Johnson, offered valuable advice and technique critiques, but that level of detail should be a regular part of the judges’ feedback, not just reserved for when a former pro appears. Guest judges should instead focus on sharing the audience’s overall impression of the competition and highlight performances that deserve recognition, even if they didn’t receive a perfect score. At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the dancing and having some fun!
