I’ve Been Waiting Almost 10 Years For A Star Trek Beyond Sequel, And It Looks Like We Finally Have A Concrete Update On The Kelvin Timeline’s Future

In 2026, it will be ten years since Star Trek Beyond premiered – the third film in the alternate Star Trek timeline. Since then, many efforts to create Star Trek 4 have faced challenges and delays. Now, we finally have some news about the future of this timeline, and it’s not good news for Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s Spock, or the crew of the *EnterpriseA.

A recent Variety article examining the first 100 days of David Ellison’s leadership at Paramount reveals the studio is focusing on reviving several franchises, including Star Trek. While a new Star Trek movie is still a possibility, Paramount seems to have abandoned plans for Star Trek 4. If this is true, it suggests the end of the Kelvin timeline story arc.

The Star Trek Starfleet Academy Trailer Dropped, And We Need To Talk About Some Of The Feedback

The creator of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks strongly disagreed with a statement suggesting the Star Trek franchise is primarily for male audiences, responding with a profanity.

This isn’t an official announcement, but there’s still a small possibility that Star Trek 4 could happen before Paramount confirms the next Star Trek movie in theaters. However, it’s become increasingly clear that the project is unlikely to move forward. The film has gone through many changes in writers, directors, and other personnel, and the Star Trek franchise has shifted focus with the success of its TV shows – many of which are available on Paramount+.

Bringing back the main actors from the recent Star Trek movies would be expensive, as they’re all in high demand now. Plus, the tragic loss of Anton Yelchin makes a full reunion impossible. While I’d love to see Star Trek 4, especially with Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, it seems unlikely to happen at this point.

With the fourth Star Trek movie seemingly cancelled, there are two possible candidates for the next Star Trek film that we know of. One is an origin story movie first announced in January 2024, originally planned for release in 2025. The other is a Star Trek movie written by Kalinda Vazquez, announced in March 2021 and still being developed as of March 2024. Whether one of these projects moves forward, or a new, unannounced film is chosen, it will likely be several years before a Star Trek movie returns to theaters.

Fans can still look forward to new Star Trek shows on Paramount+. Starfleet Academy is set to debut on January 15, 2026, and Season 4 of Strange New Worlds is also coming next year. The fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds will likely arrive in 2027, though it will be shorter than previous seasons.
