The live-action version of the popular anime “My Hero Academia” has just received an important production update, reigniting anticipation for this long-awaited adaptation. Initially announced several years back, the project has been progressing under Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. With a new writer now formally part of the team, the film is making a significant stride towards becoming a tangible reality.
Jason Fuchs to write live-action My Hero Academia movie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed that Jason Fuchs, who has worked on Wonder Woman and Argylle, will write the script for an upcoming project. Shinsuke Sato, who has directed Bleach, Kingdom, and Alice in Borderland, continues to be attached as the director. Legendary initially acquired the rights for this project back in October 2018, and Netflix recently joined the production in December 2022.
In 2014, the manga titled “My Hero Academia,” authored by Kohei Horikoshi, was first introduced in Weekly Shonen Jump. This captivating story revolves around Izuku Midoriya, a boy who was born devoid of superpowers (also known as quirks) in a world where they’re commonplace. However, after receiving powers from the world’s leading superhero, he enrolls at U.A. High School, an institution dedicated to nurturing future superheroes.
The manga wrapped up its publication in August 2024. It boasts a circulation of more than 100 million copies, placing it among the top-selling series ever. So far, its anime adaptation covers seven seasons and several movies. The final season will be available for streaming on Crunchyroll starting October 2025.
Fuchs is functioning as joint creator, joint head writer, and executive producer for the prequel series titled “It: Welcome to Derry”, which will premiere in October on HBO and Max. Previously, he has taken on acting roles in movies such as “It Chapter Two”, “La La Land”, and “The Good Wife”.
In the course of his career, Sato has successfully transformed many manga into live-action productions. Some of his notable works are GANTZ, Death Note: New Generation, and Bleach. Netflix is focusing on anime as a significant component in its international strategy, and My Hero Academia is now among their offerings along with projects like the live-action Gundam.
