Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote ‘The Batman,’ wants to write the script for a potential fourth Spider-Man movie. However, he believes there’s only one approach that would make a sequel starring Tobey Maguire successful.
After the third Spider-Man movie received a lukewarm response – and particularly due to the poorly-received Venom character – Sony decided to cancel plans for a fourth film. Director Sam Raimi and the studio also disagreed on creative direction. The planned story would have featured Spider-Man battling villains Vulture and Mysterio.
Many Spider-Man fans remember that Sony first restarted the film series in 2012 with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. Then, almost ten years later, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned to their roles in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, joining Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Everyone’s been wondering if Tobey Maguire might show up for one last Spider-Man movie, and honestly, there’s only one way I can see that happening. It’d have to be a very specific situation to make sense.
Mattson Tomlin wants Peter Parker to be married with kids in Spider-Man 4

Tomlin is eager to create another Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire, imagining Peter Parker settled down with a family while still protecting New York as Spider-Man. He shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Sony hasn’t rejected his concept for a sequel, but they haven’t given it the green light yet either.
Last October, Tom Holland hinted that a team-up with Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man might not happen due to the complex negotiations between studios. While Spider-Man is a Marvel character, Sony Pictures controls the movie rights, making any collaboration difficult. This also depends on whether Maguire would be willing to reprise his role again.
Progress is slow but consistent, and while a lot depends on factors outside of my control – things like other people and political circumstances – I haven’t received a definite rejection yet. It’s a long process, and success isn’t guaranteed, but I’m still hopeful.

As a huge Spider-Man fan, it’s becoming pretty obvious that this is the only way we’ll ever get Spider-Man 4! The previous films have all focused on Peter as a teenager or young college student, and this new direction seems like the only way to shake things up and actually make another movie happen.
In a July 2025 post on X (formerly Twitter), Tom Holland shared his vision for a fourth Spider-Man movie: he imagined Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man balancing family life as a husband and father. He felt exploring Spider-Man as a dad was a natural next step, considering the storylines of the previous eight films.
Fans loved the idea, with many expressing strong enthusiasm. One commenter said the script was sure to be a financial success, while another called it a dream come true.
Okay, so a lot of people have been asking about Mayday Parker – she’s Peter and MJ’s daughter in one of those alternate universes. Basically, she gets powers as a teen and becomes Spider-Girl! Her story in the comics is kinda tangled, but she’s shown up in a bunch of the Spider-Verse crossovers. You might even recognize her – she was the little kid in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse last year!

Marvel’s recent Ultimate Spider-Man series, written by Jonathan Hickman in 2024, has been a big hit. It features a unique take on Peter Parker – one where he never gained his powers from a radioactive spider as a young person.
He ended up living a typical life, marrying Mary Jane and having two children. He unexpectedly became a hero later in life due to strange events involving a villainous counterpart of Mr. Fantastic. The story has been incredibly popular, and the first issue had to be reprinted three times to meet demand.
It’s obvious that audiences—both moviegoers and comic book fans—are really interested in seeing how Spider-Man handles becoming a father, and that’s exactly what the next movie needs to focus on to be successful.
