After the first Matrix movie and before its sequel, Lana and Lilly Wachowski wanted to expand the story into a video game. The resulting game was called Enter the Matrix and was published by Atari. However, the Wachowskis’ first choice to develop the game was actually Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series.
Christopher Bergstresser, a former Konami licensing VP, recently told Time Extension about a meeting between Hideo Kojima and the Wachowskis that almost happened. He said the project was rejected quickly by Konami executive Kasumi Kitaue, who didn’t approve the idea.
According to Bergstresser, the Wachowskis—the filmmakers behind The Matrix—were huge admirers of Hideo Kojima. One day, Kojima, along with Aki Saito and Bergstresser himself, were at Konami headquarters when they received a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to discuss a potential Matrix game with Kojima. The Wachowskis, accompanied by a concept artist, directly asked Kojima if he would be willing to develop the game. Aki translated the request into Japanese, but Konami’s Kazumi Kitaue immediately and bluntly told them it wasn’t going to happen. Despite the rejection, the team was still able to attend the Japanese premiere and afterparty for The Matrix.
Hideo Kojima wrote about this meeting in his production notes for Metal Gear Solid 2, mentioning that the Wachowskis brought along their concept artist, Geoff Darrow. Interestingly, the meeting happened on the same day as the Japanese release of The Matrix: August 25, 1999.
So, I was reading this article on Time Extension, and apparently, even after Konami shut down the idea of a Matrix game with Hideo Kojima leading it, he was still interested in making one! It’s kinda crazy – the project just never happened, either with him at the helm or even with Konami trying to make it work later on.
Hideo Kojima is developing two new games: a horror game called OD and a stealth-action game called Physint. Unfortunately, there are no confirmed release dates for either title yet.
