I’m so excited Nintendo is celebrating 40 years of Super Mario! It’s amazing to think about how long Mario has been around. I was reading about it, and both Shigeru Miyamoto, the original creator of Mario, and Takashi Tezuka, who directed Super Mario World, were talking about how they hope to see Mario celebrating his 100th anniversary! It’s awesome to hear they’re already thinking about keeping the magic alive for generations to come.
Video Game Chronicle recently covered a new book from the Nintendo Museum celebrating Mario’s 40th anniversary. The book asks key developers like Shigeru Miyamoto and Koji Tezuka to imagine Mario still being popular in 2085. Tezuka commented that it would be amazing if Mario lasted another century, considering how difficult it is to predict what players will enjoy in the future.
According to director and producer Tezuka, who worked on both Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, what makes a Mario game fun evolves with time. He explained that Mario’s abilities and the kinds of things he can do in games are vastly different now compared to the original NES games.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario Bros., believes the key to Mario’s continued success is adapting to new technology. He explained that while they’re exploring things like movie adaptations, it’s crucial to maintain the interactive and digital nature of the games. As long as they stay true to Mario’s core gameplay – running and jumping – Miyamoto is confident Mario will remain popular for years to come.
To mark Mario’s 40th anniversary, Nintendo didn’t release a brand new game. Instead, they recently launched remastered versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Switch and the new Switch 2 console. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, also started the Nintendo Direct presentation in September by honoring his famous character.
Fans can look forward to seeing The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie in theaters on April 3rd. Nintendo also plans to release Mario Tennis Fever for the new Switch 2 console next year, along with a special Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
