A recent report indicates that OpenAI is considering adding paid advertising to ChatGPT for the first time.
The company is reportedly exploring advertisements tailored to individual users, using technology similar to how AI chatbots remember your preferences to give you personalized responses.
The new plan would let ChatGPT users decide if they want to see personalized ads in exchange for the ability to save their chat history, or turn off memory to avoid ads but lose that personalization. This is a change from how ChatGPT currently works, which mainly relies on paid subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus and business licenses.
OpenAI could put ads in ChatGPT
Recent user testing, reported by The Information, suggests people expect to see ads within the chatbot, making OpenAI more open to trying them. The Information also points out that OpenAI has a significant number of former Meta employees – around 630 out of its 3,000 total staff.
OpenAI has created a Slack channel to help new employees connect. A key hire is Fidji Simo, who used to lead advertising development at Facebook and now serves as CEO of Applications at OpenAI. She’s currently building a team to figure out how advertisements will be integrated into ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s leaders have generally been hesitant about introducing advertising. In late 2024, CFO Sarah Friar stated to the Financial Times that they weren’t currently planning to launch ads, but were exploring other options to increase revenue.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed mixed opinions on advertising. While he believes charging users for products can keep responses unbiased by advertisers, he also admits that ads can be successful, citing Instagram as a good example.
A recent October study found that AI chatbots can experience a decline in performance, similar to human ‘brain rot,’ if they are repeatedly exposed to unimportant or simple content.
