Campaign Evolved is a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, bringing the classic 2001 sci-fi shooter up to date with modern graphics. The developers at Halo Studios have clearly put a lot of work into improving the visuals using the Unreal Engine 5.
Game director Greg Hermann explained in an interview with Polygon that the development team revisited every element of the game, either by modifying, reviewing, or otherwise updating it.
People speculated whether Halo Studios used AI to assist with their work, but Microsoft hasn’t confirmed or denied it. They only stated that the studio wasn’t required to use AI. Regardless, executive producer Damon Conn assured fans, “We’ve done everything possible to maintain the core essence of Halo while updating and improving everything.”
The team recreating the game made sure to maintain the original’s feeling, mood, and emotional weight in the new version.
The updated version includes some changes that have sparked debate, like adding a sprinting ability and modifying vehicles – changes the original game’s designer doesn’t fully support. However, another developer from the original Halo team offered a more positive and optimistic view of the remake.
Campaign Evolved will be released in 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. While the Halo series has always been closely tied to Xbox, this remake marks the first time a Halo game will be available on PlayStation. And it might not be the last – Halo Studios has indicated that future Halo games will also be released on PlayStation.
You won’t be able to play against others in competitive multiplayer, but you can play through the campaign with a friend. We don’t know how much Halo: Combat Evolved will cost yet, but it will be released on all platforms—Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5—at the same time.
Microsoft is developing several new Halo games, and one of them could be an online, ongoing experience launching in 2026 to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
