Recent box office numbers for Tron: Ares are concerning, even falling behind other Disney films. While released in early October, the latest Tron movie had a weak opening weekend, earning only $33 million. This was significantly less than the expected $40 million, and below what the 2010 film Tron: Legacy made upon its release.
After being in cinemas for three weeks, Tron: Ares is projected to earn $63.1 million in the US and Canada. While ticket sales fell by 58% last week, the film still brought in $4.5 million from 2,940 theaters. This means Tron: Ares will ultimately outperform Fantasia 2000, a Disney film released in 1999 that earned $60 million domestically.

Plus, Tron: Ares is projected to become one of Disney’s top-grossing domestic films, landing around #231. This puts it slightly behind Nicolas Cage’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice ($63.15 million) and just ahead of Miley Cyrus’ The Last Song ($62.9 million).
Despite an estimated production budget of $180 to $220 million, early reports suggest the new movie Tron: Ares might lose as much as $132 million in theaters. Although it’s already earned more than the first Tron film, it’s not expected to reach the $409 million worldwide gross of the second movie, Legacy.

The poor box office performance of Ares follows a challenging year for Disney. Although the Lilo & Stitch remake reached a significant milestone by earning $1 billion, that success hasn’t been enough to offset the disappointing results of films like Snow White, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps.
However, Warner Bros., their main competitor, has been highly successful, achieving a record streak of seven films each earning over $40 million.
Joachim Rønning directed Tron: Ares, which stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Hasan Minhaj. Jeff Bridges returns for this third film in the Tron series.
I’ve been following the reaction to Ares, and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. Critics weren’t really on board – it only got a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a lot of the feedback focused on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance and a story that didn’t quite grab them. They did praise the visuals and the music, though. Interestingly, regular moviegoers seemed to enjoy it much more, giving it an 89% on the Popcornmeter! Even with that positive audience response, the movie didn’t do well at the box office, and everyone’s trying to figure out what went wrong.
Despite the challenges, the future of the film series doesn’t look promising, and some reports, including one from The Hollywood Reporter, suggest this could be the end. However, like with films such as Thunderbolts, there’s still a possibility the movie could find success through streaming. Disney has recently announced when it will be available on streaming platforms.
