Be warned: this contains spoilers for the second season, episode 3 of Matlock, titled “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow.” You can watch it the day after it airs with a Paramount+ subscription.
Things have been increasingly difficult for Matlock ever since the end of last season. This season has seen a power struggle between Matty and Olympia, with both trying to gain the upper hand. In the recent episode, “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow,” they managed to protect their plan to expose Senior, but had to let someone at Jacobson Moore take the fall. This means Matty has lost a valuable ally, and it was a particularly shocking loss. I’m really going to miss Mrs. Belvin!
Matty’s effort to share information with the New York Times about Julian and Senior didn’t succeed, but it did attract a reporter’s attention to Jacobson Moore. This led the firm’s leadership to suspect someone was leaking confidential information. Although Olympia wasn’t the source of the leak, she was aware of Matty’s actions and didn’t appear worried about Mrs. Belvin potentially being discovered for her online post about Welbrexa. Olympia’s ability to convincingly lie was now crucial.
Things initially went well for Olympia, even when her former mother-in-law, Eva (played by Justina Machado), began asking questions. However, Eva accidentally revealed the leak had gone to the Times, even though that publication hadn’t been publicly identified. This made Olympia wonder how anyone could suspect her involvement. Ultimately, Matty and Olympia decided the only way to resolve the situation was to have Mrs. Belvin take the blame.

To be honest, Mrs. Belvin had accepted she’d likely be found out about the Reddit post, and it was easy for Matty to manipulate the situation. He convinced her friend to take the blame. It was really sad to see how much Mrs. Belvin wanted to be honest and how much she trusted Matty, but I was glad to see that both Matty and Olympia eventually felt bad for her. Matty’s angry reaction in the last episode seemed like a one-time thing, not a change in his behavior.
As a lifelong moviegoer, I was immediately drawn into this story. It’s heartbreaking – all Mrs. Belvin wanted was to finish her career at Jacobson Moore and have a nice send-off, like the parties she’d thrown for everyone else. But she was just pushed out, not even given time to collect her things! I felt so bad for her, and it turns out Matty and Edwin felt the same. They secretly gave her a ‘go bag’ – a whopping $500,000! – to help her get back on her feet. That generous act even made Olympia wonder just how well-off Matty and her husband really are, and if they’d continue Mrs. Belvin’s salary. It’s a classic setup – a little kindness sparking a lot of questions.
It looks like Matty will no longer be getting information or making occasional visits to Mrs. Belvin, ending her role in understanding what she brought to the firm – including its social events. I always enjoyed their scenes together, and Mrs. Belvin’s kind nature could have been a real asset if she’d known the truth about Matty’s work with Welbrexa. Plus, Patricia Belcher is a fantastic character actress, and I’ll miss seeing her pop up on Matlock from time to time.
Matty and Olympia managed to stay at Jacobson Moore and continue their plans, with Matty secretly gaining more access to the firm while helping Mrs. Belvin pack up her things. Although I enjoy Jason Ritter’s work on Matlock, it’s sad to see Mrs. Belvin lose her job, especially while Olympia is supporting Julian. Don’t miss new episodes of Matlock on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, before the premiere of Elsbeth Season 3.
