USA Network quickly decided to renew their TV series based on John Grisham’s 1995 novel. The show, a collaboration between Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television, performed well during its first season, averaging 1.3 million viewers per episode, according to Deadline.
The show has attracted a surprisingly large audience across all platforms, giving USA Network its best first season viewership in seven years. As a result, the network has decided to renew the series for at least one more season.
Val Boreland, President of Entertainment at Versant, announced that The Rainmaker will be back for a second season on USA Network. She expressed excitement about continuing the show’s success with showrunner Michael Seitzman and partners Lionsgate and Blumhouse, promising another captivating season of the legal drama for viewers.
The first season features Milo Callaghan, John Slattery, Lana Parrilla, Madison Iseman, P.J. Byrne, Dan Fogler, Wade Briggs, and Robyn Cara. The show centers on Rudy Baylor, a newly graduated lawyer, as he battles the powerful Leo Drummond and his former law school girlfriend. Rudy begins to expose a web of conspiracies connected to the deaths of his clients’ son, in a plot typical of John Grisham’s style.
Critics had mixed reactions to The Rainmaker, but viewers loved it, giving it an 82% approval rating. Because of its popularity, a second season was widely expected. However, details about the storyline for Season 2 haven’t been released yet.
‘The Rainmaker’ Could Not Improve Matt Damon’s 1997 Movie for Many Critics

Paramount Pictures
It’s common to see stories adapted for different formats, and we’re now seeing a popular movie based on a book turned into a TV series. TV allows for a more detailed and complete adaptation of a novel than a movie can, simply because there’s more time to tell the story.
The TV adaptation of the story wasn’t a hit with critics, earning a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers felt that while the first episode showed potential, the show quickly fell into predictable legal drama tropes, losing the unique qualities of the original story and ultimately lacking enough substance. The 1997 film adaptation, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was much better received, scoring 82% and becoming known as one of the best versions of John Grisham’s work.
Viewers have shown strong support for the show, giving USA Network confidence to renew it for a second season. They believe the new season, expected in late 2026, will build on the success of the first.
