Planetary defense network targets 3I/ATLAS amid alien technology concerns

An international team monitoring potential threats from space, backed by the United Nations, is now tracking the unusual interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, which has sparked speculation about possible extraterrestrial origins.

On October 21st, the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) announced it will start closely watching the asteroid 3I/ATLAS. This is the first time the network has ever focused its monitoring efforts on an object that came from outside our solar system.

Running from November 27, 2025, to January 27, 2026, this campaign will improve Earth’s capability to follow and monitor quickly changing, hard-to-predict objects in deep space.

Experts at the International Astronomical Warning Network (IAWN) have noted that comet 3I/ATLAS is making it difficult to predict its path. Because of this, it’s now part of the Comet Astrometry Campaign, a program focused on precisely tracking comets.

This object has displayed some unusual characteristics not typically found in comets, such as an “anti-tail” – a stream of particles that moves towards the Sun, rather than away from it.

Okay, so comets are really tricky to track and predict where they’ll be, apparently. A bunch of us astronomers are planning to focus on comet 3I/ATLAS (C/2025 N1) as a test run. It’s basically a way for everyone to practice getting super accurate readings and making sure our tracking skills are on point when it gets closer. Why 3I/ATLAS is sparking alien mothership fears

3I/ATLAS is just the third interstellar object ever detected in our solar system. What makes it unusual is that, instead of behaving like a normal comet, it has a peculiar glow, spins quickly, and might even produce its own light.

But I’ve been following Avi Loeb, the Harvard guy who’s always thinking outside the box, and he thinks there’s actually a pretty good chance – around 40% – that this thing could be some kind of alien technology. It’s wild to think about, but he’s definitely got me wondering!

I’ve been following the story about that comet, 3I/ATLAS, and it’s getting pretty wild! Apparently, both George Loeb and Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna have reached out to the UN with a serious concern. They’re worried that if this comet turns out to be some kind of ‘mothership,’ it could potentially send out smaller probes to keep an eye on Earth. It’s definitely a strange idea, but they want the UN to be aware of the possibility.

Earth still has ‘no plan’ for alien contact

In a conversation with TopMob, Loeb warned that we’re unprepared for what might happen if technology from an alien civilization ever appears.

According to Harvard Professor Avi Loeb, there are currently no established procedures for handling the discovery of working alien technology close to Earth. He explained that finding such a device is an urgent matter, as it could potentially represent an immediate danger, like someone entering your home.

NASA is prepared for asteroids heading towards Earth, even considering nuclear solutions for extremely large threats. However, Harvard professor Avi Loeb believes encountering technology from an alien civilization would be much harder to anticipate and significantly more perilous.

Loeb believes October 29, 2025, is a key date for determining the nature of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS. That’s when it will be closest to the Sun, and any deliberate changes in its path should become apparent. At that point, we’ll be able to confirm whether it’s an artificial spacecraft – a ‘mothership’ – or simply a natural comet, as NASA suggests.

According to Loeb, the most obvious sign of advanced technology would be a change in the object’s course or the deployment of small probes as it gets closest to the sun. He suggests that if the object, 3I/ATLAS, is a large artificial spacecraft, it will probably continue on its current path out of our solar system, but not before launching smaller probes.
