The new movie based on a book by Colleen Hoover has received very negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which could disappoint her fans. After the mixed reaction to last year’s It Ends with Us film, there was hope that Regretting You would be better received, but unfortunately, it hasn’t lived up to expectations before its release on October 24th.
Critics haven’t been kind to Regretting You, giving it a low 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews describe the film as messy, predictable, and overly complicated. Travis Hopson of Punch Drunk Critics summarized it by saying the movie tries to do too much with a weak script.
Starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, and others, the film Regretting You centers on Morgan Grant and her daughter, Clara, as they grapple with the aftermath of a tragic accident. This event uncovers a painful betrayal and hidden family secrets. While it contains elements of a typical Hallmark romance, it’s significantly more intense. Rachel Wagner of Hallmarkies Podcast wonders…
I really don’t get why anyone would see this as romantic. It seems incredibly unhealthy, and everyone involved could benefit from professional help.
This is typical of a book by Colleen Hoover, whose stories often feel constructed from a collection of familiar tropes. Despite the criticism, or perhaps because of it, her novels are incredibly popular, selling over 20 million copies globally.
Despite receiving a low score of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, Regretting You is still more enjoyable than many of the short, dramatic series currently popular on mobile phones. These bite-sized melodramas, like Sold to the Possessive Mafia Boss, Straight Until He Kissed Me, and My Stepbrother’s Dirty Secret, have become incredibly trendy. It really makes you wonder what’s happening with entertainment these days.
‘Regretting You’ Does Have Its Fans
Although most critics didn’t like the film, Regretting You does have its supporters. Jim Schembri, for example, praised it as a skillfully crafted story with complex plots and genuinely moving scenes. Chris Joyce of Movies and Munchies also offered a positive view, though he did find the plot somewhat predictable.
Even though the story follows some familiar paths and introduces potentially awkward situations, “Regretting You” is a sweet and touching story that will likely leave you feeling good.
It’ll be fun to see how audiences react to the film. While critics weren’t overly impressed with It Ends with Us—giving it a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to an 88% audience score—it proved popular with viewers. Will Regretting You have a similar, divided reception? You can find out when it’s released in theaters on October 24, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.
Hoover’s production company is planning movie adaptations of her popular novels, Reminders of Him and Verity, which are scheduled to be released in theaters next year.
