The second season of The Boys ended with a dramatic finale, perfectly setting the stage for its fifth and final season. It also served as a touching memorial to Chance Perdomo, who sadly passed away before the season was filmed. His unexpected death required changes to the script, and his character was ultimately written out, as he was irreplaceable.
The story started by honoring Andre, Perdomo’s character, and ultimately came full circle, fully acknowledging both the character and the sadness of his departure. His father, Polarity, took charge and passionately defended his son’s memory.
How Andre Was Honored From the Beginning of Season 2
Let’s rewind to the beginning of the story. At the end of Season 1, Marie, Emma, Jordan, and Andre were all in prison. They were blamed for the riot at Godolkin University, despite their attempts to prevent it. Marie, in a quick attempt to save Jordan from being mind-controlled by Cate, severely injured her, which made it look like Marie was the aggressor – attacking someone from her own group.
By Season 2, Marie has successfully escaped Godolkin, but the others are left behind. After their release, they’re instructed to return to the school with a prepared statement denying any problems. Instead of complying, they decide to fight back. However, they’re still haunted by a previous escape attempt where Andre died after overexerting his abilities while trying to open a metal gate. They also feel Marie is partially responsible for abandoning them.
Andre’s death deeply affected Emma, leading her to relapse into old, unhealthy patterns of drinking, drug use, and disordered eating. She felt devastated by the loss of her greatest supporter and the person who believed in her the most. Andre’s father, Polarity, was equally heartbroken and left his job, turning to alcohol to cope. However, when Emma and Polarity began working together, they found a meaningful way to remember both Andre and Perdomo, and to ensure that their lives had lasting purpose.
Polarity applied for a teaching position at the school not because he wanted the job, but to get close to Dean Cipher and investigate what happened to his son. Through their investigation, they discovered that Marie was the only person who survived the program. (They later found out Homelander also survived, having been part of an earlier study in the 1980s.) Jordan also publicly revealed Andre’s death during an awards ceremony where they received recognition as the top student, which led to them being shunned by the school.
Man, everyone totally turned on this guy, calling him a liar and a traitor because he said he was also involved in the attack on Cate – which, let’s be real, the Godolkin and Vought folks wanted everyone to blame on the Starlighters. It turned out he was the one really inspiring those kids to stand up to Cipher and all the messed-up stuff they were trying to push on everyone. But it wasn’t until the very last episode that people finally saw him for the hero he actually was.
“Your Son is the Greatest Hero I Have Ever Seen”
When Marie accuses Cate of being responsible for Andre’s fate, Polarity intervenes. He explains that Vought’s Compound V can drive people to do things they wouldn’t normally consider. This is clearly a way for him to acknowledge his own past mistakes and regrets, particularly things he allowed to happen. He confesses he feels responsible for Andre’s death because he didn’t tell his son about the deadly side effects of his powers. He wishes he’d realized that keeping this information secret might have led Andre to overexert himself, ultimately leading to the same fate.
With Marie’s help, Polarity has recovered and is prepared for battle. Godolkin didn’t realize that changes in magnetic fields would give Polarity the unique ability to defeat Cipher. Meanwhile, Marie and Cate mistakenly believe Polarity is on their side. Cipher, revealed to be a man named Doug, is now free from Godolkin’s control and desperately begs for his life, explaining he was simply a VCR repairman in the 90s before Godolkin took over.
In the eighth episode, “Trojan,” the group feels sorry for Doug and Polarity takes him to the hospital because Marie has used up too much of her energy. During the drive, their conversation about Andre is very emotional. Doug remembers his time with Andre, admitting he loved him and praising his courage, calling him the greatest hero he’s ever known. Polarity’s obvious pride shows how much his son means to him, and he understands Andre remained strong and determined even while being held captive, just as he always was. Tragically, Doug is later killed by Black Noir, but his last words are incredibly meaningful.
Polarity Becomes The New Hero
Marie discovers Godolkin’s cruel plan: he’s pretending to offer lessons to the less powerful Supes, but actually intends to force them to fight to the death, eliminating those he considers weak. He’s also using this as a training exercise to see if he can control multiple Supes at once, and it’s proving successful. Marie understands she must intervene immediately to prevent a massacre, but the other Supes ignore her warnings, unaware they’re walking into a deadly trap.
As more students arrive, Godolkin grows in power. He wants to become strong enough to control Marie, which would also give him control over Homelander. While Polarity is imprisoned, Sister Sage visits him. She’s disturbed by Godolkin’s actions, telling Polarity, “This wasn’t what we agreed on,” though the original plan remains a mystery. Driven either by a desire to stop Godolkin or by a shared connection with Polarity – both having lost loved ones to cancer – she decides to release him from his cell.
With Cate’s help – and a boost from Marie restoring her powers – they sneak into Godolkin’s training grounds, fighting off the guards. Marie starts battling the students Godolkin is controlling, but then a surprising rescue arrives. Black Hole, who was allowed in because his power seemed harmless, bends over, and out climb Jordan, Sam, Emma, and others. Marie now has powerful allies, including Aly, who uses a unique ability to restrain Godolkin, and Harper, who unexpectedly gains the power to copy Godolkin’s abilities for a minute. They manage to break his control over everyone, and the students collapse. Marie declares, “We beat you – all of us, even the ones who seemed useless.” However, she soon realizes she’s mistaken.
While Marie holds him suspended in the air, seemingly about to burst, a shift occurs. Godolkin seizes control of Marie’s mind and body, forcing her to act against her will. Annabeth’s earlier visions appear to be unfolding as Marie begins manipulating the blood in the room, lifting it into the air with the intent to harm everyone. However, Godolkin didn’t anticipate Sister Sage changing sides. Polarity arrives and uses his magnetic abilities to knock both Godolkin and Marie backwards, engaging Godolkin in a fight and breaking his control over Marie. Marie, now free, unleashes a devastating attack – mirroring a training exercise where she destroyed a pig – and completely destroys Godolkin, ending his threat for good.
The most satisfying moment comes when Marie, looking at Polarity, says, “That was for Andre.” She then glances at the remains of Godolkin and sarcastically adds, “Thanks for the boost, jerk.” It was rewarding to see the story come full circle – Andre’s death motivated Marie to achieve more than she thought possible and pushed Polarity to fully unlock his powers. Godolkin’s downfall stemmed from a single oversight in his research: he hadn’t considered Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a technique using magnetic fields to stimulate brain cells. This ultimately allowed Polarity to become more powerful, potentially even surpassing both Godolkin and Marie.
Looking back, it’s clear Andre probably possessed similar abilities. If he’d been healed like Marie did for the others, he could have defeated Cipher just as his father did. Now, his father can find peace knowing his son would be proud of him for protecting their friends, the school, and maybe even the world. Though he wasn’t physically present, Andre was the driving force that united them and gave them the courage to fight.
