Blue Bloods Fans Were Shocked To See A New Actor Playing Sean Reagan In Boston Blue, But Why Was He Recast?

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first episode of Boston Blue! You can watch it now if you have a Paramount+ subscription.

Fans of the Blue Bloods franchise have a new show to look forward to with the premiere of Boston Blue in 2025. Donnie Wahlberg returns as Danny Reagan, this time traveling to Boston to assist his son, Sean. However, the role of Sean has been recast, with Mika Amonsen taking over from Andrew Terraciano. This change surprised many viewers, leaving them wondering why the recasting occurred.

From the very beginning of Blue Bloods, Tony Terraciano’s brother played Danny’s youngest son. With the new show, Boston Blue, and a different actor now in the role, viewers are understandably confused. While newcomer Amonsen seems like a good fit after just one episode, it’s still unclear why the role was recast.

Brandon Margolis, one of the show’s creators, explained the decision to TV Insider, sharing the thought process he and co-creator Brandon Sonnier had. His explanation is logical.

We aimed for a version of Sean that felt both familiar and new. We wanted an actor who resembled the Sean audiences grew up with, but also reflected the changes he’s made in his life. Now that he’s a police officer, he’s really stepping into a leadership role within his new ‘family’ on the force. We wanted to start the story with him already established in this new phase of his life.

We don’t know exactly how much time has passed between the end of Blue Bloods and the start of Boston Blue. But, since Sean has already graduated from the police academy and established himself in Boston, it’s natural that he’s changed in appearance.

Even though I still fondly remember the original actor who played Sean, I’m looking forward to seeing what the new actor brings to the role. Once he recovers, it should be fun to watch him play a rookie.

The season premiere of Blue Bloods featured both a new cast member, Mika Amonsen stepping into an existing role, and the return of familiar faces. Bridget Moynahan was already confirmed to reprise her role as Erin Reagan, but fans were also surprised to see Marisa Ramirez back as Maria Baez, confirming she’s still with Danny after the events of the last season. Ramirez hinted that despite their relationship continuing, viewers should be concerned about the challenges of their long-distance relationship, even though New York and Boston are relatively close.

Whether there will be more cast changes or story developments remains to be seen as Boston Blue goes on, but fans enjoyed 14 seasons with Andrew Terraciano playing Sean Reagan. And after just one episode, Mika Amonsen is already showing why he was chosen for the role, and it’ll be interesting to see how he puts his own spin on it.
