Every child of the 90s grew up with this movie – but even though there were two sequels, 30 years later, few people remember it

So, back in 1925, something really cool happened, and it eventually became the basis for an animated movie from Steven Spielberg’s company, Amblin Entertainment. I remember watching it constantly as a kid in the 90s – it was a total must-see, right up there with The Lion King and Home Alone. We’d practically wear out the VHS tapes playing Balto over and over again! It was one of those movies you just didn’t get tired of.

I remember when Balto first came out in 1995 – it totally bombed in theaters! It only made $1.5 million opening weekend, and a measly $11 million total domestically. It’s crazy to think now that it’s become a real cult classic! What happened was, even though it didn’t do well in cinemas, it killed it on VHS. Everyone had a copy, and it became a huge hit in our living rooms. It really connected with a lot of kids growing up in the 90s, and it was a genuinely moving story for us.

Because the original Balto movie sold well on VHS, two sequels were made and released directly to video in 2002 and 2004.

The story of Balto is inspired by true events that happened in Alaska. Balto, a dog with wolf ancestry, wasn’t accepted by either people or other animals, finding friendship only with a rooster and two polar bears. He faced off against Steel, a powerful malamute and the leader of a sled dog team, for the love of a beautiful husky named Jenny. When a blizzard isolated the town and vital medicine couldn’t be delivered, Balto became their last hope, bravely embarking on a rescue mission.

While Balto was popular with kids in the 90s, it’s largely been forgotten today, especially by those who didn’t grow up with it. It didn’t achieve the lasting fame of a movie like The Lion King, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable – in fact, it still holds up remarkably well even now.

You can find the movie Balto and its sequels on Apple TV and Fandango if you’re interested in watching more of his story.
