David Fincher almost directed a Star Wars film following ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ but the project stalled because he and Lucasfilm couldn’t reach an agreement on a key issue.
After the conclusion of the most recent Star Wars trilogy, the future of the films has been uncertain, with many changes in plans for new movies. A film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, focused on her efforts to restore the Jedi Order, was announced, but it’s now reportedly paused.
Despite initial concerns, the Star Wars universe is doing very well on Disney+ with popular shows like The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka. Lucasfilm is hoping the upcoming movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for release in May 2026, will be a major success.
According to a recent report, David Fincher’s planned Star Wars film fell apart during discussions because he insisted on one specific condition.
David Fincher wanted final cut on his mystery Star Wars movie
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, David Fincher’s plans for a Star Wars film fell apart because Lucasfilm wouldn’t grant him final cut – the ability to have the last say on the finished movie.
Because making a huge movie like Star Wars is so expensive, studios are very careful about who has the final say in editing. They need the movie to be a big financial hit to make their money back.
The planned movie would have continued the story after The Rise of Skywalker, focusing on a character from the sequel trilogy, though it’s unknown who that character would have been or what the story would have involved. This project is different from a previous attempt by Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh to create a film called The Hunt for Ben Solo, which Disney CEO Bob Iger ultimately rejected.
It’s been over six years since a Star Wars film was in cinemas, and Disney and Lucasfilm are aware of that. Following the success of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the next big screen adventure will be Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, and featuring Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth.
Details about the new movie’s story are being kept secret, but it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This indicates the studios are eager to begin a fresh chapter for the franchise.
