Okay, so this is wild. Kohler, yeah, the plumbing company, made a smart toilet! It actually analyzes your… well, you know, what goes in the toilet, and sends the results to your phone. Apparently, it gives you a bunch of health info based on your… waste. Seriously! It’s like having a doctor in your bathroom, which is kinda creepy but also… futuristic?
About the size of a toilet rim cleaner, this device attaches to the outside of the toilet bowl and uses sensors to check your urine and stool. It can analyze things like hydration levels, gut health, and even detect potential signs of blood.
After a decade of development, this device is now available for pre-order at $599. To fully access the data it collects, you’ll need an additional yearly subscription, delivered through a phone app.
How it works
Users unlock the toilet with a fingerprint scanner on a remote control. Kohler says this data is securely encrypted, kept private, and designed for detailed health monitoring at home, though it does have some limitations.
The device has trouble identifying contents in dark-colored toilet bowls because of poor lighting, likely hindering the camera’s ability to scan properly. Plus, the ongoing subscription fee makes an already expensive product even pricier.
The device attaches to the outside of the toilet and uses a camera to analyze its contents. So, I pre-ordered the Dekoda, and their website is kinda vague about when it’ll actually ship. Plus, it looks like it’s only available to people in the U.S. right now, which is a bummer for those of us outside the country.
Kohler isn’t alone in trying to innovate the bathroom experience. On October 18th, Charmin announced that its extra-large “Forever Roll” of toilet paper was now available in stores nationwide.
