Kohler, known for plumbing and manufacturing, has developed a smart toilet that analyzes your waste and sends health information to your smartphone.
About the size of a toilet bowl cleaner, this device attaches to the outside of the toilet and uses sensors to check your urine and stool. It can analyze things like hydration levels, overall gut health, and even detect potential signs of blood.
After a decade of development, this device is now available for pre-order at $599. To fully access the data it collects, you’ll also need an annual subscription, and that data is delivered through a phone app.
How it works
Users unlock the toilet with a fingerprint scanner on a remote control. Kohler says this data is securely encrypted and privately stored, allowing for detailed health monitoring at home, though the system does have some limitations.
The device has trouble identifying contents in dark-colored toilet bowls because of poor lighting, likely hindering the camera’s ability to scan properly. Plus, the ongoing subscription fee makes an already expensive product even pricier.
The device attaches to the outside of the toilet and uses a camera to analyze its contents. The Dekoda website doesn’t say when pre-orders will ship, but it does mention that the product is currently only available to customers in the United States.
Kohler isn’t alone in trying to innovate bathroom experiences. On October 18th, Charmin announced that their extra-large “Forever Roll” of toilet paper was now available in stores nationwide.
