Head’s up: Major plot twists coming from Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 – ‘Blood of My Blood’. If you haven’t watched this episode yet, it’s best to steer clear!
If you share my enthusiasm for Outlander, you’ll likely acknowledge that while we appreciate the romance, battles, and other delightful aspects of the series, it’s hard to ignore the intense and distressing experiences the characters have endured over time. The 2025 TV lineup is set to offer more of these elements with the prequel, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and just learning about the ordeal Hermione Corfield faced during the birthing scene has already left me quite anxious.
What Did Outlander: Blood Of My Blood’s Star Say About How The Birthing Scene ‘Exhausted’ Her?
In the sixth episode following the events of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” Season 1, Episode 5 (which features a distinct theme song compared to its parent series), matters worsened considerably for Julia and Henry. While Claire’s parents remain trapped in the year 1714 and are navigating perilous situations as they search for each other, it seems that Julia finds herself in an even more precarious predicament. As a woman forced into servitude, she was compelled to engage in intimate relations with Lord Lovat to make their child appear as his own, a desperate measure aimed at ensuring both her and Henry’s survival and relative safety.
In the series, we’ve progressed past the initial episodes that depicted the Beauchamps’ first month in the past (individually). Now, Julia found herself ready to give birth just a few minutes into the latest episode. The arrival of Claire’s new sibling (which slightly disrupts my fantastic Outlander Season 8 theory) was challenging for Julia, but it seemed that the acting process was equally demanding for Hermione Corfield. She confided in Variety that filming the birth scene was “extremely intense” due to its duration, as it required almost an entire week, and she mentioned:
For several days straight, we filmed the crucial birthing scene inside that room. I aimed to portray the growing intensity of the contractions alongside the escalating emotion of the women involved, as these aspects complement each other. As the scene progressed, both elements became increasingly intense and wild.
It’s quite clear that my opinion is that the growing band of Scottish midwives, whom you know as “howdies,” assisting Julia during childbirth exhibited behavior that was far more unconventional than merely becoming wilder over time. Initially supportive, these ladies appeared to me as if they were members of an eccentric birthing cult, their actions leaving me with the impression that they might abandon Julia post-delivery and raise her newborn in the woods, away from civilization.
In the Outlander series, a significant portion will continue to be based on “Blood of My Blood,” but this storyline has left me concerned for one of the couples.
Indeed, events took a drastic turn for the worse following Davina’s bold accusation that Julia had seduced the lord, while she was surrounded by other women who were already weeping and wailing. This escalated further as they grabbed at her, forced her out of her bed, and formed a circle around her, sneering and shouting, while three women attempted to intervene, claiming to save her soul. This entire ordeal felt reminiscent of a bizarre horror scene, taking place during Julia’s labor. Reflecting on it now, I must admit that it makes me feel quite uneasy. Corfield added:
Julia’s primary concern is that she’s operating on pure instinct, solely focused on protecting this child. The daily scuffles left me physically handled, so maintaining the facade of exhaustion wasn’t necessary – I truly felt drained from battling for survival.
Wow, it sounds like Corfield had an intense scene to film! During a particularly difficult labor, Julia collapsed onto a straw-covered floor, begging for aid and trying to persuade the other women that the lord was indeed the baby’s father and not by choice.
Reflecting on the intense scene, it’s clear that the actress convincingly portrayed exhaustion. It makes me ponder if her stress levels were high enough during filming to require similar amounts of deodorant as I needed after witnessing the ordeal she and Julia experienced.
