League of Legends pro player Gabriël ‘Bwipo’ Rau has walked back comments he made suggesting women shouldn’t compete in games while menstruating, saying he now realizes he didn’t mean what he said.
In early September, FlyQuest player Bwipo sparked controversy with comments about women competing in esports. He suggested that a woman’s menstrual cycle can impact performance and that there isn’t enough support for professional female players during those times.
The remarks caused a strong negative reaction from women in the competitive gaming community, and Sjokz publicly criticized her Belgian colleague, calling his comments uninformed.
He said sorry for his comments on September 10th, but FlyQuest still decided to bench Bwipo for their playoff matches against Vivo Keyd Stars. Riot Games even postponed the release of the Worlds music video to remove footage of him.
Bwipo feared for League career over period comments
While in China with FlyQuest for the World Championship, Bwipo revealed he was worried his career might be affected after making those statements, and that he didn’t actually mean what he said when he initially said it.
He admitted to a time when his future was uncertain, saying he worried about his career and whether he’d be able to compete at Worlds, as he told Sheep Esports’ Armand Luque.
That was a really difficult experience, mainly because I didn’t actually agree with what I’d said. When I listened back, I realized it sounded absurd and didn’t make any sense. It’s tough to be criticized for something you don’t believe in, but it’s still important to own up to it and take responsibility.
Bwipo apologized for the “huge blunder” and for “misrepresenting” the LTA with his words.
I sometimes think out loud while I’m trying to figure things out, and I ended up saying something incorrect before I could stop myself. It was a big mistake, and I truly regret it because I don’t agree with what I said.
The most difficult thing has been feeling unable to speak up and disagree with what happened. Even though there were repercussions, I still recognize that what I said was wrong and I would admit that regardless.
