Mark Cerny and Jack Huynh recently shared some updates on the Amethyst project, giving us a glimpse of what the next PlayStation – likely the PS6 – could be. Rumors suggest the console might be released in 2027, and experts at Digital Foundry believe it could remain relevant for as long as ten years.
PS6 will be a console for a decade
The Digital Foundry team analyzed the recent presentation and considered its implications for the PlayStation 6. They observed that the partnership between these companies will lead to hardware combining machine learning with ray tracing, and this work will likely influence future consoles. This shift moves traditional rasterization techniques to a less prominent role, echoing a question Digital Foundry previously asked Mark Cerny.
Given your focus on advancements in machine learning, how important is improving rasterization in your plans for future hardware?
Traditional rasterization techniques are still valuable, and we’ll continue to refine them. But we believe the biggest advancements will come from using ray tracing and machine learning.
Digital Foundry sees this as a natural progression that’s been happening for some time. AMD is now adopting a strategy NVIDIA pioneered in 2018, and that’s potentially good news for gamers. Successfully implementing these new technologies should allow the PlayStation 6 to deliver powerful gaming performance without compromising visual quality – something AMD graphics cards have struggled with in the past.
The PS6’s powerful new features could lead to a situation similar to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S launch, meaning games may take a long time to fully utilize the new hardware. As developers create games that really push the PS6’s capabilities, the PS5 might struggle to run them effectively.
Digital Foundry believes the PlayStation 6 could have a lifespan longer than any previous PlayStation console. Traditionally, new consoles come out every 7 years, but their research into the ‘Amethyst’ project indicates that Sony is developing hardware designed to stay relevant for the next ten years. If this is true, it’s good news for gamers, as it means they won’t need to upgrade as frequently to enjoy the latest experiences.
