Laurence Fishburne says he’ll return for Matrix 5 ‘if it makes sense’

Laurence Fishburne has talked about the possibility of reprising his role as Morpheus in a potential fifth Matrix movie.

At New York Comic Con 2025, while discussing a Matrix reunion, actor Laurence Fishburne indicated he’d consider returning for another film, but only if the script is strong and the story makes sense. He admitted he’s unsure if a fifth Matrix movie would fit that criteria. This conversation followed Warner Bros.’ announcement in April 2024 that Drew Goddard will be writing and directing the next installment, currently known as The Matrix 5. (Source: Variety)

During a New York Comic Con panel with Josh Horowitz, Laurence Fishburne and Joe Pantoliano discussed the lasting impact of the original *Matrix* trilogy. Fishburne explained that nearly every science fiction or fantasy action movie made since *The Matrix* has been influenced by it, to the point where people have almost forgotten its origins. He went on to say that major franchises, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wouldn’t have the same visual style if *The Matrix* hadn’t come first.

Laurence Fishburne, the original Morpheus from the 1999 film *The Matrix*, has spoken about why he wasn’t in the 2021 sequel, *The Matrix Resurrections*. He explained that he contacted director Lana Wachowski, hoping to return to the role, but it didn’t work out. According to Fishburne, he simply thanked Wachowski for considering him, and she responded in kind, but ultimately didn’t include him in the film.
